PART 4: Glimmer in the Night

It was late and Alexandra was laying in bed thinking about what had happened over the past three days. She spent the first couple of days unpacking, which wasn't that fun but needed to be done. That isn't what she was mainly focusing on, however. She had made a friend.

Or at least she thought she did.

She wasn't actually sure what she thought of Paislee. She was very nice, and they got along really well at the boardwalk. They had spent the time walking around looking at all of the stores in the area. Paislee told Alexandra about all of the best places to swim and when the best times were to go down during the week. They then went out to lunch and talked about the best restaurants and stores in the area. Overall, Paislee was somewhat joyful to be around.

But she was very extroverted, and that was new for Alexandra; who herself was used to being quiet, indoors most days on a call with her friends talking about the new movies in theaters or gardens. Talking about plants was one of Alexandra's favorite subjects, and Paislee didn't seem like a plant girl. But she did have her perks. She was well versed in the history of America, which Alexandra thought was weird at first until she remembered she could name around fifty different plant types, so she didn't say anything.

Alexandra sat up. Her room was finally set up after being half done for a while, and it was looking better than their old house was. Her bed was in the corner on the opposite wall of the door. The frame was white and there was a minimalistic design on the backboard. Her dresser was on the wall in front of her bed, and followed a similar theme to her bed. She had a TV hanging up on the other wall with a pastel yellow carpet and matching bean bag facing towards it. There were also pastel yellow curtains, and she had a white net in the opposite corner to hold all of her childhood stuffed animals. There were the only things her parents let her keep from the old house that were not necessities一and were not convenient to travel with一because they came from her great-great-grandmother, and held value in the family. The walls to her room were also white. Overall the place was pretty basic, which didn't bother her because that is what she preferred in her room. It gave her more space to sprawl out on the floor after school.

She couldn't sleep. That part was becoming obvious to her. Why she couldn't lay down like the past few days was unknown to her, but she decided to get up and do something. No point in sitting and doing nothing all night.

She grabbed her phone from her bedside table and got out of bed. Her phone read that it was roughly 11pm, which meant that she had been lying there for two hours. She opened the door to the hallway, and looked towards her parents room. Their door was opened slightly, and the lights were off. She could hear the TV and her mothers loud snoring, so she knew they were fast asleep. She went the other direction, towards the stairs and her brother's bedroom. Their door was also open, but that was because Raphael was afraid of the dark, and used the hallway light to help him sleep at night.

Alexandra peered in for a minute to see if they were both asleep, and they were. The far wall had the bunk bed they both shared: Raphael on the bottom bunk and Jackson on the top. There was a closet on the back wall closest to her, and two windows also on the back wall. The room was covered in toys, all of which belonged to Raphael. He was big in trucks and had all of the construction equipment out across the green colored carpet the parents had bought just yesterday for the room.

She didn't spend too long there because it was weird to be in her brother's room in the middle of the night. She snuck downstairs, and towards the kitchen. The light to the kitchen was on which was not unusual for her parents usually liked to keep at least some dim light lit in case they needed to go downstairs in the night. She was happy that they did because she often went down for water, like she was doing now.

After grabbing something to drink she still felt restless, and decided that she hadn't explored much of the backyard before because of how busy she'd been. She went over and opened the door, making a loud squeaking sound as she stepped outside. She winced a little bit hoping her parents hadn't heard that. They were not known for being light sleepers, but she was worried that the new house was getting to them similar to how it was getting to her. Before she stepped completely outside she turned the light on to the outside. The backyard was sort of small, and surrounded by forestry. On the left and right of her were her neighbors houses, who she hasn't met yet. The very back was a dense forest that went on far longer than she could see. She sat down on the steps to the door. She didn't plan on being out here long, just needed a breath of fresh air before going to sleep.

It wasn't until she saw something in the dirt at the back of the yard that she got up again. It was a slight glimmer of light, and despite knowing she shouldn't be so close to the woods this late, she was very curious as to what it could be. And since she didn't know if it would be there in the morning, she went to explore the mysterious object.

Upon closer examination, she realized it was a necklace. It looked older, and was made out of silver. It had a red diamond shaped pendant on it. She couldn't tell how old the necklace was, but she figured it belonged to the old owners of the house. Despite this she thought it was pretty, and with a bit of cleaning would go well with some of the clothing she has. She decided to take it with her and add it to her jewelry collection (which had shrunk from the move, so getting some new stuff was always appreciated).

She looked up to head to the house before seeing what looked like the remains of an old trail heading in the opposite direction she was standing in the yard. She considered looking at it closer, but had more sense than that. She would be able to check it out another day. She went back inside, turning the light off before heading upstairs for the night.

As she got to her room, she turned the light off—which had been on the entire time—and noticed something on her window. She walked over to it and realized there was an imprint of the letter 'A' on it. She didn't think too much of this, thinking the prior owners had a sticker of some sort on there, and she didn't notice until now because of the lighting. She shrugged it off and tried to go to sleep.
