I saw things in that valley that I can only describe as a hellscape. There is no way we can do anything to get across, and we promised Muarice we would come back if we found life. Nothing much happened to write a journal, so I will simply record the horrors I saw before the valcano flowing into the Earth. I am a biologist, after all.

-The barely living husk of a giant centipede was entangled in a vine trap attached to a giant tree. They were sucking it dry with needles that pulled the fluids out of the creature in gulps that were visible as bubbles in the vine.

-A group of small monkeys with owl features on their face. They seem to secrete some kind of sulfurous gas from holes in their forearms. I only managed to glimpse a few of them as the main troop kept inside a giant burnt yellow cloud of fog to the left of the volcano.

-A Pterodactyl with three heads. Two of the heads were pecking hard and fast at one of the necks until they had stabbed it free. They laid it down in a nest full of babies who ate it as their first meal.

-A herd of chimera boars gathered in a circle around what I can confidently guess were two males fighting for dominance (judging by the buldge on each).

-The shell of a massive beetle was prowling around the edge of the forest without a head, not a mile from us. Underneath the creature, where a cow would have udders, were several tubes dangling what looks like small people and other prey animals. they did not 'look' all that appetizing, but Mute caught a wiff of its aroma, and we had to physically push him back into the woods. He was drooling as if he saw a five-star steak. I looked over my shoulder to see a saber-tooth tiger grab one of the bait animals. A mouth like that of a goblin shark wrapped around it and easily swallowed it whole.

End of log. Statement:

There's nothing here for us. Nothing we can hunt with just the five of us. We are heading back to the nest. Hopefully, the others are alright, but we won't be delivering good news.
