"Smile, Rosalie!" Her dad laughed as he took the photo. She had just finished her school dance recital, and he couldn't have been more happy for her.
As she smiles for the photo, Treech runs up to her. "Rosalie! You did so good!" Little 6 year old Rosalie was shy and almost always blushed at compliments.
"Thank you, Treech." She smiles as she hugged him. Her dad smiled to himself. "How about I get a photo of the both of you?"
Rosalie was snapped out of her memory as Treech talks to her. "Rosalie? Rosalie, you okay?" Rosalie looks up and smiles. "Yeah, I'm fine." As she dusts off her red skirt, her eyes meet with a camera man, already interviewing Coriolanus on why he's there.
Rosalie felt herself step back from everything when Treech grabbed her wrist gently, as if he's afraid to hurt her. "Go, I'll be right next to you."
She feels her hand instinctively latch onto his, a sense of warmth growing inside her. They make their way behind Coriolanus and his tribute.
"And who are you two?" The reporter says, clearly wanting a new story. "I am Rosalie Sweets and this is my tribute, Treech Styx." A smile crept up Rosalie's face as she spoke.
"And how did you end up in this cage, Rosalie?" Rosalie looked at Coriolanus then back at the reporter. "Well, my fellow mentor had dragged me into the van, but I don't regret it. I got to meet you, Mr......" Rosalie trails off, clearly not knowing the reporters name.
"I'm Lucretius Flickerman. News reporter for the weather?" Rosalie nods her head in understanding, but really has no clue who he is.
"And you, Treech, how do you feel about all this mentoring shabam?" Treech clears his throat before lowering himself a bit to speak into the microphone. "Well, if it was anyone else, I'd rather be alone on this but knowing I've got my sweetie back makes me feel safer."
Rosalie looks up at Treech and smiles. "I'm sorry, your sweetie? Do you two know each other?" Lucretius looks back and forth between the two, almost begging for an answer.
"Me and him were best friends back in 7, before I moved away to the Capitol. His nickname for me has always been sweetie since the day we met." Rosalie smiles into the camera.
The reporter wants to talk but Coriolanus and Rosalie are grabbed by peacekeepers. "Get us food, please. Or atleast water. Me and Lamina need it." Treech whispers before she gets pulled away by peacekeepers.
The truck drive was an awkward one between both Mr. Snow and Ms. Sweets. "When were you going to tell me you knew him?" Coriolanus' voice broke the silence, startling Rosalie. "I- I don't know. I wasn't planning on it."
Coriolanus sighs when she replies. "He wants food for the girl, doesn't he?" Rosalie's heart sunk remembering her. Treech had to protect her. It was natural. She's only 15.
"Yeah, he does. Why?" "Because I see how you look at him. I don't want you to get crazy jealous then the whole kindness facade just disappears. Face it, Rosalie. I know you hate the Capitol. You could get punished for anything against the Capitol with death or torture."
Rosalie was silent. He was right. Sure, she hated the Capitol but that's because she was district. She always will be. She liked the food, the clothes, the houses, the education, and honestly she wouldn't have hated it if she could've just brought him with.
"I don't want that to happen to you." Coriolanus' hand reaches up to her cheek and his thumb gently caresses her. They both stare into eachothers eyes for a second before Rosalie speaks.
"I won't, I swear."
The truck stops and their ordered into the school building. They both fix their hair and uniform quickly before walking in.
"You're late, Mr. Snow and Ms. Sweets. Your little excursion is in violation of atleast 10 school rules, one being endangering a student."
Rosalie felt her heart sink. Would she be in trouble? If so then she definitely wouldn't get the prize.
"What student?" Coriolanus retaliates. "Yourselves. I'm planning to have the gamemakers remove you as mentors immediately."
At this point, they both took their seats, Rosalie being next to Festus and Coriolanus being next to Sejanus.
"You said to show off our tributes to the Capitol, you didn't say how." Rosalie says, resulting for the Dean to turn his chair.
"I did not say to jump into a cage with them, where they could easily slaughter you, did I?" Rosalie bites her tongue. "They didn't show them anything we didn't know. That they're human."
Sejanus' help made Rosalie relax before Dr. Gaul came in. "Snow fell down in the cage , he fell down in the cage, fell down in the cage but landed..." "Onstage." Replies Coriolanus, clearly understanding her riddle.
"You're good at games, maybe one day you'll be a gamemaker like me." "If the games even continue." The dean mumbles.
"Oh they will, with acts like Ms. Sweets, introducing Treech as her lifetime best friend and Mr. Snow, holding Lucy Gray's hand and showing her off." Dr. Gaul smiles, the one that sends shivers down Rosalie's spine.
"Tell me girl, what are the games for?" She turns to Rosalie and she's frozen in place. "Control. The show the districts the Capitol is always and will always be stronger." She can't look anyone in the eye while she says this. Her head stays down as she watches her fingers twiddle in her hands.
"Hm. I want you two to write an essay about the Games." Clemensia shoots up. "Dr. Gaul, I work with Coriolanus on all his papers, could I join these two?"
"Why not? It'll be an exciting experiment." She chuckles as she leaves the room.
Rosalie bit the inside of her cheek. Great she thought Working with both Clemensia and Coriolanus.
