chapter warning: alcohol abuse
My mind had not been very stable lately, as my relationship with Ame went from a somewhat comfortable situation to downright irritable after our trip.
Following the incident at the apothecary's shop, we went back home in silence. I made sure to keep the medicine for her headaches safe in my pockets, so I could put it in a jar upon our arrival. It'd be easier to keep around. But what I had not expected was that Ame's migraines were about to become the least of my problems.
Giving someone medicine for a physical problem is one thing. But there is no remedy for the problems within one's heart.
A few months went by, and it became clear to me that Ame was spiraling down and there was nothing I could do. Worse than that... I had the feeling I was responsible for her state of mind. Yet, I couldn't pin down exactly what I could've said or could've done that led her to shut herself off this way. Was it my habit of talking back? Was it the fact I kept asking for a freedom she couldn't give? I felt like these were not good enough reasons to suddenly become this... cold. Had I missed signs?
Had my attitude gone that far? Or was it that she was worrying about other things so much, my tantrum was just adding fuel to the fire? I couldn't know. In all honestly, I couldn't see how my actions had crossed any line.
I still tried to keep up the smiling kid act for a while but getting nothing but silence or snarky remarks back tired me after some time, and I started spending most of my free time in my bedroom, reading. That was fine by me, I felt better alone anyway. I did become cold in return. Maybe I was just trying to give back the energy she was giving me...
It was around seven in the morning, and I was already up. She hadn't come to sleep the previous night... I gently made my way out of the bed before approaching the kitchen, standing on my toes. Ame had fallen asleep on the eating table, her head resting above her arms, and an empty bottle of alcohol had collapsed on the floor, leaving only broken pieces.
I blankly stared at her, not even fazed at the sight. The first time had been quite a shock But after seven times, I wasn't surprised anymore. I knew there was no point in trying to wake her up, so I got some thick tissue and started putting away the broken glass, throwing it in a separate container from the trash can. I didn't want her to hurt herself the moment she woke up.
