It was a Sunday.
A sweet, hot, sickly boring, relaxing Sunday.
All of us, even Oliver, were in the long gallery having tea. Sir James was reading the Sunday paper. Me and Felix draped ourselves along the sofa, Vee slowly falling asleep beside me. Duncan hovered over our proceedings. Farleigh, nearby, looked idly at a glazed cabinet.
"What are these?" He wondered, peering in. Elspeth, sitting near Sir James, looked up and groaned.
"Ugh. The Palissy plates."
I didn't know what a Palissy plate was, let alone the fact we had multiple of them.
"Do you mean Bernard Palissy? The sixteenth century Huguenot ceramicist?" Oliver glanced over. Sir James and Felix's attention were both piqued.
"Yes. Do you know him?" James asked. Me and Vee exchanged confused looks, the light conversation waking her up.
"I've always loved his work. But I've never seen anything of his in real life."
"You're into ceramics?" I wondered. That was something James cared about very much. Ollie only shrugged my way.
James smiled. For the first time, he looked actually interested in Oliver.
Farleigh wasn't too amused.
