GRACE WAS ASLEEP IN THE HOSPITAL BED WITH SEVERAL ELECTRODES TAPED TO HER TEMPLE. A SCREEN WAS MONITORING HER PROGRESS.
Her eyes slowly opened, adjusting to the light of the room. She looked around to see Scott asleep on a chair close to the bed. "Scott.." She hoarsely called out to him. Her throat felt like it was on fire. She grabbed the half-empty bottle of water and tossed it across to him, hitting him in the stomach.
Scott jolted awake, a smile appearing on his face when he noticed Grace had woken up. "You're awake." He sat up in the chair, pulling it closer to the bed.
"Yeah, just now." She tried to clear her throat, but it hurt. She put her hand around her throat and could feel the scars that were left from the shock collar.
"Don't talk too much." Scott told her. "Your vocal cords were damaged from the collar. It'll take a while for them to get better." He watched as she traced over the neck scars. "And as for them, it'll take longer."
She gave him a small smile. "Everyone okay?"
"They are." He nodded his head. "Thanks to you."
"No." She shook her head. "The X-Men." She pointed to Scott.
"You saved everyone, Gracie." She smiled at his nickname, reminding her of her grandfather. "You had enough strength to stop the machine, stop the manipulation. Because of you, we got to walk away."
"We're even, then." She laughed but coughed as it was painful on her throat. "Did you really stay here all the time?"
"Something like that." Scott laughed. "To be honest, the last week was touch and go for you. I thought I'd stay at night, make sure nothing went wrong."
"Thank you." She nodded at him.
"But believe me, someone else stayed here much more than me." He turned his attention to the shark bic lighter sitting on Grace's tray table. Grace blushed when she noticed it. "He never left your side."
"Shut up." She brushed him off.
"I'm serious." Scott put his hands up in defence. "Bobby had to drag him away to get breakfast this morning." A wide smile plastered over Grace's face. The room door slid open, and Scott and Grace turned their attention to John standing in the doorway. Scott took his entrance as a que to stand up. He leaned over to Grace. "Told you."
"Whatever." Grace playfully pushed him.
John moved out of the way as Scott walked towards the door. As the door shut, John walked over to the bed and sat down on the side of it. He looked at Grace nervously. "Hey."
"Hey." Grace said in an almost whisper.
"So, you're alive." John let out a small laugh.
"Living and breathing." Grace joked as her voice croaked. She leaned over and grabbed the lighter off her tray table. She placed it into John's hand, placing her hand over his for a second too long. "You forgot this."
