An Unofficial Quest

I woke up on a beach.

Sand was stuck to my skin, which was burning in the sun.  Everything felt sore, which was no surprise, since I'd just thrown part of the ocean at Neptune and defeated him-I did defeat him, right?

I groaned as I collapsed onto the sand after attempting to stand.  Pain.  It was pain.  I was in pain.  The world was pain.

But one touch to the water and I felt a rush of energy.  I stood and cleaned the sand off, walking up the beach and deciding to ignore the staring people.  They were probably so confused as to how a teen washed ashore and started walking like everything was fine.

I staggered to the nearest store and 'borrowed' some clothes, since the ones I were wearing reminded of Neptune and I really didn't feel like remembering that.  A man scratching lottery tickets outside told me I was in San Francisco.

I was close to Camp Jupiter.  To build my strength, I went back into the ocean and entered through the lake, a few campers looking startled at me as I walked out.  My clothes dried instantly, and I went looking for Nico.

Pain erupted in my head and side, like I'd been stabbed.  But I didn't have any physical injuries.  I continued through the annoying pain.  It felt more like there was a bubble between me and the pain, I didn't feel it fully.

I saw Reyna in the distance with Octavion and headed the other way.  I didn't feel like talking to Octavion today, not now.  I needed Nico.

And finally, I found him.  He was near Pluto's temple, which was covered with gems and stuff.  I didn't really pay attention, because I collapsed at the sight of Nico, letting him acknowledge me on his own.

He turned, hearing me fall.  His eyes widened and he came over to me just as I fell onto my back.  I smiled weakly, trying to reach a hand up to his face mainly to see what his reaction would be.

"River?"  He asked, assessing me.  "What happened to you?"

"I fought Neptune, watched people die, went on some quests, not in that order.  What have you been up to?"

I sounded loopy, like I was drunk or delirious.  Nico looked at me with a rare worry in his eyes, trying to remain calm.  He brought me to Camp Jupiter's med bay area thing, where he betrayed me and gave me a sedative.

I woke up some time later, alone in a cot.

Feeling back to a hundred percent, I left in rage to go throw an ocean at Nico.  How dare he give me a sedative and say it was simply medicine.

I found him with Hazel and a guy around seventeen maybe, with shaggy black hair and sea green eyes.  I collapsed again, this time out of shock.

No one noticed me this time, so I watched the interaction in silence.  And when they left, I still stayed there, in shock.

"P-P-P-P-P-"

I couldn't even say his name, I was so pathetic.  My brother, in Camp Jupiter.  My cousin, who is Greek, last I checked, in a Roman Camp.

If they didn't kill him, I would.  Why the heck was he in Camp Jupiter?

-*-

"Where do you think you're going?"

I swear Nico jumped a couple feet in the air.  Turns out you can scare the son of Hades.  And he does not take well to it.

"River!"  He hissed, grabbing my arm.  "What are you doing out of the Infirmary?!"

"Stalking you, what else?"  I said.  "And also; how dare you trick me into a sedative!  I was fine!  And what is Percy doing here?  The Romans will kill him!!!"

"You were not fine!  The healer said you were barely hanging on, the only way he could get you back to health was if you were asleep and your body was resting and resetting itself.  And I don't know what Percy is doing here, but he has amnesia and brought He-Juno into Camp, so she's got to be involved with it somehow."

I crossed my arms.  "You never answered my first question.  Where are you going?"

"To look for the Doors of Death,"  he said.  "Now go back to the Infirmary, don't tell Percy or anyone anything about him if you want to keep him out of harm, alright?  I'll be back sometime."

"I'm coming with you,"  I said.  "I lost you once, I ain't doin it again."

He stared at me in disbelief.  "Absolutely not!  Are you crazy?  You were on your death bed just a few hours ago!"

"It wasn't that serious,"  I told him, rolling my eyes and hooking my arm through his.  "Come on."

He stopped me, his face serious.  "River...I need you to be safe."

It was barely a whisper, barely audible, I barely heard him.  But I did.  I stared at him, searching his eyes to make sure it was real.

"I need you to be safe too,"  I whispered.  "I need you...as much as you maybe need me."

Nico stared.  Then he gripped my hand, sighing.  "I guess the only way I'll know you're safe and not doing something stupid is if you're with me."

A/N:  Hiiiiiii.  Sorry if this chapter was terrible, I feel like it was different than usual.  The next one will probably/maybe (idk) be short because it'll be Mark of Athena and I'm not even going to try and write Tartarus, so they'll be in the jar most of the time.

Let me know if you think River and Nico should stay friends or have feelings for each other, I don't know.  I think just friends, but we'll see.  I'm not putting any Solangelo because of personal beliefs and stuff.

Anyways, thanks so much for reading, hope y'all have enjoyed the story so far, please remember to vote and comment!  (also this is not edited so sorry for any grammar mistakes, misspelled words, or weird sentences, feel free to point anything out)

Have a great day/night and be safe!!!
