Wealth, power and fame.
The man who fought for all this was Gold Roger, the Pirate King. When he was executed, his last words were: "You want my treasure? You can have it. Look for it! I have the greatest treasure in the world hidden somewhere!"
This treasure is the One Piece and it lies somewhere on the Grand Line. This marked the beginning of the great pirate age!

~ Somewhere in the East Blue ~
Luffy had been rowing for a while, Dawn hadn't been seen for a long time and the barrel with her provisions was already empty. But who can get by with just ONE barrel?! All she could hear was the sound of the sea as she noticed her rowing boat getting faster and faster, or was she imagining that? She turned around in confusion and saw a whirlpool in the water that was getting closer and closer. "A whirlpool. What do I do now? If I get into ot, I'm done," she said and began to think hard. As the boat almost reached the whirlpool, an idea occurred to her. She took the lid off the barrel, quickly climbed in and put the lid back on. "Hopefully works this." She feels the boat getting faster and faster and breaking apart. The barrel was caught in the suction and rocked back and forth. The black-haired woman yawned heartily and her eyes slowly began to close. Rocking was also relaxing and a little nap couldn't hurt either. Soon she was dozing peacefully as the barrel floated through the waves.
She only woke up when the barrel seemed to roll. Luffy listened quietly to the voices. "Nah, you whistle. You probably pulled the leash again when things got tough, right?!" "No, no, you're wrong! I'm just about to take this barrel to Lady Alvida!" she heard a young, panicked voice. "Uhhh, that would be more suitable for us!" "We're thirsty as hell!" Did they think there was something to drink in their barrel? Luffy had to smile as an idea came to her. That would be fun! "Oh no! Lady Alvida will kill us all if she finds out!" "Not if you keep your mouth shut. Right, Corby?" "Y-yeah. Y-y-you're right." She felt the barrel being lifted and put down with a thud. "It's pretty heavy." "Come on. Open it!" Cracking knuckles could be heard. "Just a moment. We'll have that right away. A specialist has to do it." That was the signal for her to get ready. She turned in the barrel so that her feet were on the floor and she was now sitting in a squatting position. She tensed her arms and, with a loud scream, smashed them, along with her body, through the lid. She felt her fist hit something else besides the wood, but she didn't care much. Those present there looked at her in shock, except for the one who wanted to open the barrel. He fell to the ground unconscious. Who could have guessed that a girl would come out of the barrel?! Surprised, she looked to the side and saw the unconscious man there before she asked: "What's going on here?" She turned her head to two other men who were standing next to the unconscious man and looking at her, speechless, with wide eyes. "Well, who do we have here?" "Who the hell are you?!" they shouted at her. "Is your friend taking a siesta or what?" She got out of the barrel without any problems. "He's one of us! You knocked him out!" Surprised, Luffy looked at the sword that was held in front of her nose. The guys had their swords out and the one holding his in front of her said angrily, "Listen! We're pirates and we don't have any fun with stuff like that, girly, get it?!" Luffy ignored him and turned to a small, skinny boy with pink hair. He wore black pants and a white shirt with blue stripes on the sleeve. He also had blue, round glasses. "Is there perhaps something to eat here?" she asked the still speechless boy. "That's enough!" shouted one of the men. How bold was that woman?! "You bastard!" They lashed out, screaming. The boy screamed in fear and Luffy turned around in confusion. She managed to break the top parts of the blades without any problems and threw them at the ceiling. The men had fallen to the ground in horror, while the boy, trembling, took his hands away from his face. He couldn't believe what he saw. The woman with the straw hat was unharmed, while the two pirates, sitting on the floor, looked at her in disbelief. Sweat ran down their faces. Disappointed, Luffy looked at them and said: "Your swords aren't really good, huh?!" "W-w-who are you?" "Me?" Luffy crossed her arms over her chest and looked down at them. "I'm Portgas D. Luffy, pleasant!" After introducing herself, she grinned widely at the men. Frightened, the pirates grabbed their comrade, who was lying on the ground, by the arms and ran out of the room screaming.
