Dear Sylvie,
I overheard something funny today. They said that you were dating Dugal! I chose not to believe it till I saw it for myself. What did you see in Dugal? This thought occupied my mind, bugging me constantly. Of course, I went down to look and I couldn't believe my eyes. You were all over him! He leaned in towards you, whispering something intimately into your ear. You smiled that radiant smile that used to belong to me, bursting out in fits of laughter, placing a hand on his shoulder and another on your cheek, looking at him oh so fondly. I wished you could have heard how loud my brittle heart shattered. Alas, you were too absorbed in your conversation.
Summer break is coming, oh the flowers are in full bloom now! Your favourite, marigolds, scattered all around. A constant reminder of the memories we had. Of the times when I was brave enough to show up at your house with those flowers I picked myself and how we would scatter them around your room. That thought left an unbearable ache in my heart. As unsettlingly as it might seem, these marigolds have appeared right in my room, not in yours. Maybe it's the jealousy, or maybe it's the despair, my longing for you beside me, I have seen a few petals in my bed. Not to worry though, marigolds are said to represent optimism too. Maybe the odds will be in my favour with you.
I apologize for my cowardice. Despite all these strong feelings I bear for you, I can't seem to look you in the eyes. That smile, those large, curious eyes, and that jet-black hair, all belong to someone else now. I'd like to think that I could look at you with the same expression as I had after today's news but I simply can't. The pain is too much to bear despite my longing for you. I hope to see you again but for the time being, I think it would be better to dwell in the sorrows of my pain.
Yours always,
Oleander
