This story is about two teenagers who developed Hanahaki disease. Hanahaki disease is a disease caused by one-sided love, where the lungs of the victim will sprout flowers, which will eventually grow large enough to render breathing impossible. This disease works in a peculiar way where if they believe the love to be one-sided, the flowers will bloom.
There are no particular flowers that will bloom, but studies have suggested that they resemble the enamoured's favourite flowers, or colour.
There is no set duration for this disease, but it develops a week after onset of love, and will only disappear when the victim's feelings are returned, or when they pass on.* The flowers and their roots can be surgically removed. However, by doing so, the victim's feelings are removed along with them, resulting in the erasure of their feelings for, and memory of the other person. Possible side effects include removing the victim's capacity for romantic love forever.
This disease can also be cured** when their feelings are reciprocated, but the feelings have to be of genuine love for the victim.
Other symptoms of the disease can include fever, uncontrollable shaking, loss of appetite, low body temperature, and hallucinations.
*This disease is fatal for 1 in 1000000, where surgery and love are incapable of cure.
**In some rare cases, the disease might cause irreversible damage to the lungs.
