(Narrator POV)
Instead of going directly home, Hanni was in the school library for a while, doing some of her homework since she didn't want to be caught for having someone else do her homework.
She stayed until the security came round telling the students to leave as they were closing up the school for the day.
So she had to go home.
Hanni watched as some students had friends to walk home with and travel together.
But she was just left on her own, 7:30pm and by now, it was pitch dark because of the winter season.
Hanni shivered as she walked towards the school gate, only wishing she had someone with her.
At least someone she could walk with by her side so she doesn't feel too unsafe.
So it began, Hanni was walking towards her usual bus stop she goes to, she wasn't even half way home and was already hoping to catch someone she knew on the way home.
Hanni made her way down the dimly lit streets that she'd usually walk down, she hated how far this bus stop was.
And also hated how quiet it would get when it was getting late.
She had seen some memorable things down this street, memorable in both good and bad.
On the good side, she had seen cute cats and even a horse travel down the street. It would bring her comfort whenever she walked by.
Sometimes she'd even see young students in groups walk by which would make her feel safer.
But sometimes on the fridays she'd finish late, she would see the occasional drunk man or woman on the street, hoping that she could just pass by without a problem.
Luckily for her she found herself at the bus stop without much of a bother.
She sat at the seats under the bus shelter as she waited for her bus to arrive.
There weren't too many people around, but most people were minding their own business, on their phones or looking off into the distance.
It was a different bus that stopped first, completely emptying the bus stop that Hanni was at.
Now she felt the discomfort settle in, it was this feeling of impending she'd feel often when she was by herself.
She didn't know what it was, but she hated it.
Though she never experienced anything bad happening at night, she always hated staying out this late because she never wanted to get caught up in any incident.
Hanni bit her lip in nervousness as she looked around quickly, there wasn't anyone she could see nearby.
She didn't know if that was good or not.
But she felt unsafe.
So she called the person who she had faith in the most.
Hanni's heart was beating out of her chest, her gut was telling her something was going on.
So she impatiently waited for the person on the other end of the line to pick up.
To her luck, after the fourth ring, she heard the line connect.
"Hanni? Why are you calling at this hour? Shouldn't you be home?"
It was Minji, she knew Minji had football practice but seeing at it was now 8pm, Minji was at home by now.
"I- I know.. I got caught up at school and I left late." Hanni replied, "do you think you can pick me up? I'm at the bus stop..."
Minji hummed, "I'm at a dinner with my parents Hanni, I'm really sorry." Minji apologised.
