When we encountered police officers on the street, we decided to confront them, a deliberate step often taken by North Koreans seeking protection in South Korea.
After turning ourselves in to the police in Mokpo as North Korean refugees, we were taken to a center for North Korean refugees to have our identities checked. In the following weeks we underwent various examinations. First we were medically examined to determine our health status. The Secret Service then conducted in-depth interviews to ensure we did not pose a threat to national security. After our information was carefully verified and our credibility was confirmed, we were transferred to the Hanawon Retraining Center. This center is specifically designed to help North Korean refugees adapt to life in South Korea.
During our stay in Hanawon, we gained valuable insights into South Korean culture, rights and responsibilities, and vocational training programs. It was a comprehensive process aimed at preparing us for the new life and equipping us with the necessary tools for successful integration.
After completing this educational and adaptation phase, the center supported us in finding an apartment and a job. We received financial support to ease the transition. South Korea recognizes North Koreans as part of their people, which is why we received the status of South Korean citizens after successful verification and integration. Even after official recognition, support continued; We continued to receive help and advice to establish ourselves in South Korean society and build a new life.
This approach shows how seriously South Korea takes welcoming and integrating refugees from the North, ensuring that we can not only survive, but thrive in our new homeland. We are deeply grateful for how smoothly this process has gone. And it turns out the radio was the best gift in the world. This was my story about how a small spark of hope can ignite a blazing fire in your heart. And how no dictatorship in the world can suppress the unshakable will for freedom.
