the girl laughed again, her hair blowing wildly in the wind. they had been doing this for ages now, and yet she never seemed to get bored. her green eyes glowed with joy as she watched the blonde strike again, completely sweeping the boy off his feet.

as percy hit the ground yet again, the laughter of his sister made his insides burn. he looked up and scowled at her.

"why don't you try then, if you're so good at it?" he shouted at her.

the girl grinned. "i'm still injured, dumbass. but also because i know my place, unlike you. no one can beat annabeth. and plus, seeing you get humbled is better than mom's cookies."

"not true!"

"she's right—"

"shut up, annabeth!"

percy got to his feet, riptide hanging by his side in defeat. his body was aching from the fighting, and as he dragged his body over to the nearby pitcher of water, he tried to ignore the two sets of eyes watching him.

"what's with you today, anyway?" annabeth asked, wiping her lips as she brought the water down from her mouth. "you're off your game."

percy shook his head. "no idea. maybe it's the whole golden fleece thing. and i'm worried about grover. i just can't shake the feeling that he's in trouble."

"he's never gone this long without contact," his sister agreed, jumping down from the seats to join them.

annabeth frowned. "you think he's . . ."

"not dead. i would've felt it. but my dream couldn't have been a coincidence, could it?"

the girl picked up a spare sword that was lying on the ground and swung it absentmindedly. "what should we do?"

percy kicked the ground. "what can we do? that stupid tantalus guy is running camp like a prison, and a dangerous one at that."

annabeth hummed in agreement. "let's wait it out a little while more. he's bound to do something about thalia's tree; he can't pretend like nothing's wrong for much longer."

his sister looked at annbeth, lips pressed in worry. percy knew how much she cared about annabeth; the two had practically grown inseparable since last summer, after finally putting their bickering aside and realizing how much they suited each other.
