no moonlight basks the camp in a glow that night, and each tree looms over her like a ghostly monster, watching her every move.

it is deadly silent, the only breakage being the hushed whispers of the gentle tide as it laps onto the shore of the beach. her footsteps are gentle against the ground, cautiously calculated as to not alert anyone or anything. no one can know where she is going, as she knows they will immediately try to stop her.

her heart beats wildly in her chest, partially out of fear of being caught, and partially out of desperation to get into the labyrinth. two weeks she has struggled through without her brother, but she has had enough. if he will not come to her, she will go to him.

the cool summer air tickles her bare arms and the girl is momuntarily struck with the idea of turning back and grabbing a jumper, but quickly thinks against it. every fiber of her is itching to find her brother, and a slight chill is not enough to stop her.

she ducks between each tree like a hush of wind, trying her best to find her way in the dark. her breathing picks up with her pace, anxious to slip between the rocks before her absence is noted. she knows it's unlikely anyone will notice she's gone before dawn, but her friends have been keeping a close watch on her these past two weeks, so she cannot be certain.

eyes sweeping the clearing in front of her, she spots the entrance to the labyrinth in a heartbeat, the big clump of rocks standing out against the trees like a sore thumb. nervousness creeps up her spine as she remembers the memories of what had happened the last time she had gone down into its tunnels, but the girl knows she has no choice.

just as she begins the final steps in the night air until she is trapped below ground again, a voice in the night air stops her in her tracks.

"maddie."

she should have known the girl would see her leaving and follow her. squeezing her eyes shut in frustration, the girl calls behind her without turning, "go back to your cabin, annabeth."

"turn around and look at me, mads."

the girl knows there is little hope in escaping annabeth, so she does as she is told, turning on her heel to face her best friend.

arms crossed and face tight with anger, annabeth looks more hostile towards maddie than she has been in weeks. she is still clad in her pajamas, but something tells maddie that annabeth has knows she would sneak out. the girl seems to know her better than maddie knew herself.

"you're going back in there, aren't you?"

"i have to find him, annabeth."

the blonde is not happy with her answer, as her face grows even tighter and her voice becomes a notch more angry.
