maddie is surprised her feet haven't worn holes into the deck by now.

she has spent the past— gods know how long— walking around the deck, eyes glued to the surroundings for any sight of annabeth or percy. she ignores the slight ache in her legs, too restless to do anything else.

piper and jason had been with her, pacing as she is, but they had decided about a half hour ago to explore the park a little, as a way to clear their minds. maddie had declined their countless invitations, confirming about a hundred times that she would 'be alright'. she wants to stay on the deck, where she can see around them and be the first to know when any of the others come back.

as she waves off jason and piper, maddie cannot ignore the rumbling in her stomach for any longer, so with one last glance around she ducks into the mess hall, with the aim of grabbing something quick and simple so she could head back out to keep watch.

maddie is glad when the door to the mess hall shuts out the majority of the distant singing of coach hedge's 'old macdonald'. giving a little sigh to finally have a bit of quiet, she wanders over to the cupboard, peaking around for some form of nourishment.

she is so absorbed in finding her lunch, she almost doesn't notice the shimmering mist appear above the table behind her. it is only when she hears a voice, does she drop the packet of crackers with a small gasp, whipping her head around to face the person. she goes to grab for a weapon, but stops when she sees the sight before her.

it is not a person at all, but rather some sort of hologram of one. it is like the display of camp that surrounds the walls, only this is smaller, and maddie can tell that the person she sees can see her too.

it appears to be a girl, slightly older than her, with buff, tanned skin and dark curls. her face rests in a slightly angry look, making her almost look scary. however, this look swiftly disappears when maddie turns around to face her.

the person goes completely frozen, staring at maddie with her eyes wide. maddie stares back, confused, not exactly sure what to do with herself.

she clears her throat. "um . . ."

"maddie?" for such a tough-looking girl, her voice is full of vulnerability. she stares at maddie as if she is seeing a ghost.

maddie gives her a slow nod, still eyeing her with confusion. "how—how are you here?"

the person does not answer, still gazing at her in disbelief.
