It’s been a month since I moved to the Philippines.
At first, I didn’t understand Filipino.
But now, I can understand it—at least a little.
My Yaya told me I need to practice speaking Filipino,
because all my classmates speak it.
It’s so hard to learn.
Sometimes, I even bite my own tongue when I try to speak Tagalog.
My Yaya and Manong try to teach me,
but sometimes they laugh at me because of my English accent.
It’s too much… it feels like so much pressure.
And now, it’s been a month since I met the guy who humiliated me in front of everyone.
---
I picked up my school uniform and packed my things into my backpack.
After finishing my makeup, I was ready for school.
Our school is well-known in Manila because it’s a university.
When I was done packing, I went downstairs to tell Manong Abet I was ready.
But instead, I found Yaya Susana.
“Magandang umaga, iha,”
she greeted me cheerfully.
“Kumain ka muna bago ka pumasok sa school, iha.
Wala na dito ang mommy at daddy mo.
Ang aga nilang umalis—pumunta raw sila sa New York para sa business niyo.”
She said while placing food on my plate.
“Iha, okay lang ‘yan.
Trabaho ko ang alagaan ka.
Ano ka ba?”
She leaned in and patted my head gently.
“I mean… thank you for staying with me,
even though I’m so demanding and spoiled,” I said softly.
“Ang bait mo kaya, iha.
Mas mabait ka pa nga sa mommy mo.”
“Sige, kain ka na muna. Tatawagin ko muna si Abet.”
Then she walked away.
---
I was left staring at the food on my plate.
Ever since I was a kid,
Mommy and Daddy always left me for business.
They never really cared about me.
They only cared about their f***ing businesses.
I stared at the food for a while—
then decided to leave it untouched.
---
I went to the parking lot and finally found Manong Abet.
“Manong Abet, can we go now?” I asked.
“Sige, tara na, Hesperia,”
he replied with a cheerful smile.
“Alam mo ba, iha, yung paaralan mo…
maraming bully d’yan.”
“How can you say that, Manong?” I asked, confused.
He replied,
“Kasi naman, iha, noong kabataan ko,
sabi ng mga tao, ayaw nila sa unibersidad na ‘yan dahil sa mga bully.”
He said this while focusing on driving.
---
“Nandito na po tayo, Hesperia.
Mag-ingat ka sa mga bully.”
He smiled at me.
I opened the car door,
my black boots were the first thing to hit the ground.
I slowly stepped out—
and suddenly,
I saw hundreds of students staring at me...
Like I was their queen.
