Day 4: Fishing/Injury
"Where on earth are Ben and Luke? They should have been back from the supply run like an hour ago!" Gwen exclaimed as she checked the time on her phone, "I've texted them both a thousand times, and they haven't answered!"
"Oh, come on, Gwen! Luke probably spotted a fancy car and made Ben stop to admire it," Hope suggested with a playful tone, "if they were in any real trouble, they would have called us!"
"I'm sure they're fine, Gewn," Priya chimes in, handing Jacob a bucket of water to put out their campfire, "they probably just got caught up in the sales and lost track of time! You know how much Ben likes a good deal!"
"It's a good thing coupons have gone digital; I do not miss cutting them out of newspapers every Sunday!" Jacob declares, dumping the water onto the fire to extinguish the flames.
"Somehow, Chief, I cannot picture you clipping coupons!" Felix chuckles.
"Believe it! It was our Sunday ritual..." he rolls his eyes, "I swear I can still feel the ink on my fingers! But Priya's right, Gwen; I'm sure Ben and Luke are fine and will be back any minute!"
"Exactly! In fact..." Priya tilts her head, listening for a moment, "I think I hear the van coming now!"
Sure enough, true to Priya's word, the hunters saw their van speeding down the dirt road to their campsite, leaving behind dust clouds in its wake. But they had to admit, Luke and Ben were driving rather fast... The van came to a stop once it reached the campsite, and Luke jumped from the driver's seat, looking frightened and frazzled. Ben was nowhere to be seen as the team's youngest member ran towards them.
"Luke! Where's Ben?" Jacob demands.
"We were attacked!" Luke cried, skidding to a stop, "by a warlock or something! He kept throwing fireballs at us! Ben got hit, and I managed to put a bullet through the bastard's arm, and he vanished in a cloud of smoke!"
"What!? Is Ben hurt?!" he pressed, his worry spiked.
"Yes! He won't stop screaming!" he leads the team back to the van, "I managed to get him into the van, but he just seems to keep getting worse! I don't know what's wrong with him!"
Reaching the van, Luke throws the back doors open. The team paid no attention to the supplies stuffed in the back, focusing solely on their medic lying on the cushioned floor. Ben was on his back, trembling and crying out as pain surged through his body. His skin was ashen and clammy, and sweat was soaking his clothes and making them stick to his body. But the scariest part was Ben's veins; they glowed like fire, which was a sure sign that the warlock had cursed him.
"Ben!" Jacob yells, climbing into the back of the van to kneel beside his friend. He places his hand on the medic's arm and immediately retracts it, "fuck! His skin feels like it's on fire!"
"You said he was hit by a fireball, Luke?" Felix questions.
Luke nods, "yeah! I didn't see where Ben got hit, but it looked like a ball of fire!"
"Probably a hex or curse..." he mused, "did the warlock say anything?"
"No, he just kept yelling nonsense at us!" he replies, "do you think Ben will be alright?"
"I'll need to do some research, but hopefully, it's temporary..." he says nervously as Ben screams in pain.
"We can't just sit around and do nothing while Ben's in so much pain!" Gwen argues, "there has to be something we can do to help him!"
"We need to lower his body temperature," Hope states, "the spell is probably burning him from the inside... We need to try and keep him cool until Felix can find a counterspell or something!"
