Day 7: Hunting/Travel
Jacob stood and stared at the RV parked before him. After a month of planning, today was the day he would set out to hunt the supernatural. He'd already sold his house and most of his possessions to buy the RV and supplies to get him started on a life on the road. Now, all he needed to do was get behind the wheel and follow the trail of monsters.
He never imagined his life would change so much after just one night... It had been over a year since Lily was murdered, and he discovered the truth about the supernatural. He spent a month mentally recovering from seeing his wife's body drained of all its blood and then began training with the mysterious hunter, Falcon. Jacob had learned a lot in the past year and was now ready to become a solo hunter.
While he wanted revenge on the creatures who killed Lily, Jacob also wanted to make the world safer. He failed to protect Lily, but now that he knew the truth, he would do everything in his power to protect humanity from the monsters in the shadows. It wouldn't be easy, but Jacob refused to let anyone else suffer the way he had at the hands of the supernatural.
So, he was leaving his old life behind. Selling the home he and Lily had bought was the hardest thing he'd done since burying her. But the house was no longer a home; instead, it was a cold, empty reminder of what he lost. He would miss it, but the house was never the same after Lily died, almost as if its hominess died with her.
And it wasn't like he had people who would miss him. He didn't talk to his parents or extended family, and most of his friends stopped speaking to him after Lily died, and he disappeared to train with Falcon. The only people who still talked to him were Ben and his parents.
The Shepherds have always treated Jacob like family; if there were one thing he would always regret, it would be leaving them. Especially because he had to lie to everyone except Ben about where he was going. Ben knew the truth about Jacob's plan, but his parents believed Jacob was being deployed again. It was a white lie, but it still hurt Jacob to keep the two, who considered him their second son, in the dark.
And Ben... He was Jacob's best friend. They served together, and even when they weren't on deployment, they stayed connected. Ben was the one to help Jacob the most after Lily's death, and Jacob could confidently say that he would have gone insane without Ben keeping him grounded. Leaving him was nearly impossible, but Jacob had to do it. He had to keep the world safe from the monsters that took Lily.
"Looks like it's just you and me..." Jacob says to the RV.
"Hey! What am I? Chopped live?"
Jacob whirls around on his heels so fast he nearly loses his balance. Coming up the path was the man he'd just been thinking about, Ben. The medic has a large black duffel bag slung over his shoulder and a cheeky grin on his face. He doesn't seem concerned in the slightest by the deer-in-headlights look Jacob is giving him.
"What the hell are you doing here, Ben?!" Jacob exclaimed.
"I'm coming with you!" Ben announces, dropping his duffel bag at his feet once he stops walking.
"What?! No, you're not!" he argued.
"Yeah, I am," he states, crossing his arms, "you think I'm just going to let you chase monsters across the country on your own?! You really are crazy if you believe that, Jake!"
"The doctors said I'm clinically sane," he glares, "you're the crazy one for wanting to come with me!"
"I told you, I'm not letting you do this on your own," he repeats firmly, "you've been through a lot this past year, Jake, more than anyone goes through in a lifetime! I'm not about to let you destroy yourself avenging Lily!"
