I awoke in an unfamiliar room, on some sort of couch. It was a charming little couch, in various shades of blue and green, to look like natural waves from the ocean—the waters surrounding the island. Cayus Island, I remembered. The center of the couch's back panels were elevated in height, to create the crest of a breaking wave. I could almost imagine someone surfing atop it.
There was a hearth beside me, ablaze with orange flames to keep the room cozy and warm.
I quietly rose to the toes of my feet, silently walking across the room to the window. I looked out into the sky and saw the sun just beginning to rise. Shit. There's no way we make it back before Morning Swim unless we begin to sail back soon. I needed to find Elias, urgently. We'd have to come back another time.
I crept up to the door, using my training to keep me silent. I pressed my ear against the brown panels, listening silently. I could make out the voices of Soren, Elias, and their father. I had no idea where Renor was. Worry and panic coursed through my veins, when one of them began to speak.
"You didn't tell the halfling?" a deep booming voice, presumably their father, asked the brothers.
"No," whispered Elias. "We were starting to enjoy the presence of one another. We were having fun, making memories, chatting. I wanted us to become friends, or slowly start to like one another. She's lived in the human lands all her life. It isn't normal to just declared you're Twin Flames," he stated.
Soren snorted. "Well, you're better off now that she knows. Maybe that will convince her to remain here without going back to the shunned lands."
Elias replied to his family, "No. We can't trap her. She'll begin to hate us. She might not even want to help us after that. Humans feel emotions... differently. And she is half after all."
I went to rip up the door and state my mind, when I realized there was no handle. It was seemingly... locked. Only magic could open it. I began to pound the various rectangular, wooded panels with my fist. Banging as loud as possible.
"HEY!" I yelled out as loudly as possible.
"We hear you! I'll open the door," Elias called out in reply.
Slowly, the door swung open on its hinges. That would definitely take some time to get used to.
I felt their gazes, and heavy stares upon me. I began to speak, "I will not be remaining here forev--" but was cut off by their father.
His voiced, laced with authority and power, coursed through the entire house. "You will do what is needed, for these innocent Enchanters. And consequently, your own people."
I stared at him, my eyes full of threats and challenges. "I have to return to Oirasora first for a few days. Pack my things. Warn my instructors on what's going on. Then, and only then will I consider helping Cayus Island," I spoked, as fierce as a warrior heading into battle.
"Three days," their father stated as he snapped his fingers and disappeared into the night, leaving only the whoosh of his wind magic behind.
Elias looked at me with pity while Soren was full of devious laughter.
"Is he... always like that?" I asked, eyebrows raised in question.
The brothers both replied, at the same time, "No!" and a smile came across their faces. Elias turned to hold my gaze, "He truly means well. He is just blinded by the notion of protecting his people. My father is from one of the four most powerful families here. Thus, he is a leader, willing to do anything to protect the Enchanters here. Just as you would to Oirasora."
