I shut the front door of my house, the slam echoing. The house is silent as I enter the living room area.
I glance at the kitchen, seeing it empty. The white marble countertop clear of any flowers or food. I remember when all the lights would be on and both my parents would be cooking in the kitchen.
The countertop would be filled with different ingredients as they'd play music while they made dinner for me and my sister. I loved the weekends, since I could sit on one of the stools and just watch them in awe.
My sister, Eleanor and I would watch them sing to each other, their voices not sounding great. But they didn't care. They would sing with big smiles on their faces, my dad occasionally dipping my mom.
They were so in love.
We were a happy family.
I take my eyes away from the kitchen and notice that the TV in the living room is on. When I walk in further into the room, closer to the stairs on the wall that'll lead up to my bedroom, I see my mother's hand with a glass of white wine inside her palm.
I take a deep breath, calming my nerves. I knew she'd be home; I saw her car in the driveway. I was hoping that she'd be asleep by now, although it's barely 8pm.
After school, I went to Alena's house. I knew I didn't want to come here and face my mom's wrath. The school had definitely called her about my grades. I'm sure of it.
I really don't want an argument with her tonight.
I attempt to slowly walk to the stairs, grabbing the wood railing, but before I can take a step, my mom speaks.
"Where have you been?" Her voice is quiet but loud enough for me to hear over the chatter coming from the TV.
I don't face her when I answer. "Alena's."
"Doing what?"
"Homework," I lie.
She chuckles lowly, "Is that so?"
She definitely got a call from Mrs. Anderson. That woman can't keep shit to herself.
"I'm a little bit behind in my classes, so she's helping me." I explain.
I can act careless at school, but I have my guard up even more at home, since my mother stopped acting like my mother over four months ago.
"You know Emilia," From the shadow in front of me made my the TV light, I watch as my mom stands from the coach. "I'm getting really tired of your excuses."
I hear her slow footsteps towards me. When I turn around, she's only a a few feet away from me.
"Mom, I—"
She cuts me off, "I got a call from your counselor today."
I stare at her eyes, noticing the dark circles under her eyes. She must not be getting enough sleep through her shifts at the hospital. My mom's a doctor.
