Levi"I think I like someone."
That gets Kelly to lift her eyes away from her computer and to where I'm standing. "Really?" She speaks in slight surprise.
I nod slowly. "I'm not really sure."
"How are you not sure?" She scrunches her eyebrows together, her wrinkles becoming more prominent.
"Well, I've never . . really liked anyone." My statement sounds more like a question.
"Are you telling me or asking me?" She raises a brow in question.
I raise my shoulders and shrug. My chin rests on my hands as I look at Kelly type something into the computer, turning to get a book behind her.
"That's why I'm not sure. I've never felt like this before." I admit, my voice becoming quiet.
"Well, does she treat you nicely?" Kelly asks, stopping her typing and looking up at me.
I press my lips together before mumbling, "She doesn't treat me badly."
Emilia certainly does not treat me all that well since half the words she utters to me are threats of sewing my mouth shut and slapping me, but she has never made feel like others have.
Unwanted. Guilty. Hated.
Throughout my suffocating years of meeting people who have always disliked me, she was like a breath of fresh air. One that seemed to awaken a part of me I did not know existed.
The way I am around her? It's only when I'm with her.
This girl has gotten me stop thinking about my future and more about the next time I'll see her.
"Kelly, I think I'm overestimating my emotions." My eyes stray behind her desk, looking at the shelves with textbooks stacked neatly on them. "Maybe I'm just happy that I finally met someone who enjoys my company."
"I enjoy your company." Kelly says which brings my focus back to her.
I smile and tilt my head to the side. "I mean someone my age."
She waves me off, resuming her work while saying, "You just need good people around you."
"I know," I move off the tall countertop that connects to her desk and begin to step backwards. "But it's a small circle of people. I want to expand it."
"You will." Kelly answers while the door to the entrance of the library opens. "It will expand when the right person comes along."
I'm about to say something back to Kelly when I see the person who entered the library, their eyes looking around the quiet space until they meet mine.
I'm caught so off guard by seeing her that when she starts to move towards me, I lose my footing and fall back to the ground. My back makes contact with the carpeted floor, making a loud 'thump' sound.
"Oh sweet heavens," Kelly exclaims, the squeaking of her chair signaling that she's standing.
I groan quietly, my back hurting from the harsh impact of the carpet. Thank god I didn't fall on chair or table.
