Max is adjusting just fine to the people, their manners, and the town itself. At first, she had a hard time doing so because she hadn't been among humans, let alone zombies, for a long time. She's been by herself or around werewolves for a long time. Now she's becoming friends with mostly werewolves, a few zombies, and very few humans. Most of the humans are judging her or scared of her because she is a werewolf and the people are just still not used to it, even after a year or so.
Now, it's been a few weeks since she was found by Zed, Eliza, and Addison. Maxine met Willa, her sister. She agreed to babysit Zoey, Zed's little sister, when his dad or he himself was at work or school. Maxine has been taught a lot, and she ĺives with Willa now. Wyatt lives with Eliza since a month ago, and they couldn't be happier.
Maxine sits on a blanket in the grass of the park, enjoying the sunshine and the lake in front of her. She's enjoying every bit of this beautiful day; the smell of freshly mowed grass and the flowers, the sound of birds chirping, people talking and their footsteps passing by, cheerleaders practicing outside with each other, the bell of Coach's froyo car. When Wyatt had agreed to show her around town, he told her to go get froyo first. It's like an obsession of his, but Maxine loves it.
"Hey, freak!" She hears someone yell. She opens her eyes and turns around to see a cheerleader, mocking her and making fun of her. Maxine breathes in and out, repeating a Mantra in her head; three things can not long be hidden, the sun, the moon, and the truth. It works until the group of cheerleaders walk up to her and put water down her back, ice cubes included. She gets up, shows her fangs, and glows her eyes. She's about to actually attack them as they keep laughing, but she drops to the grass floor, her eyes flickering a sick green color like her necklace before her eyes turn back to the blu-ish gray tint. The cheerleaders only laugh harder before running off in their pink and green uniforms as they keep joking about her. She hits the ground with her fist as hard as she can. She breathes in deeply and grabs her blanket before returning back to the den.
The water is dried up for most of it because of the warm weather and the breeze of wind when she gets home. She tries to get dressed as soon as possible, but she's too late, and Willa walks in.
"What the hell happened to you?" Willa asks, still calm for now. But when she gets to hear what happened, she'll get mad. Max knows that much in the few weeks she has been with her sister.
"Nothing." Maxine says abruptly, continuing to get dressed into something else.
"How would you like to explain the soaked shirt?" Willa stands in front of her with her arms crossed, watching her put on some gold jewelry. At least that's something werewolves are not allergic to, and gold jewelry still looks stunning.
"Fell in the lake." Max lies.
"Only with your shirt?" Willa asks skeptically.
"It doesn't matter, Willa! I'm heading out. See you for dinner."
"Change of plans. I agreed we'd meet up with the zombies and your brother." It still sounds unfamiliar and weird to hear 'your brother' towards her, but she kind of likes it. "We'll eat at the new restaurant for dinner to talk about the Prawn."
"Why? You guys already have everything planned out, right?" Max seems to get a little agitated by the fact she has to go out for dinner instead of just staying in and playing fun games with the rest of the werewolves.
"Please, Max? Just come with me to dinner." Willa asks with a smile. She sighs in relief when Maxine nods and agrees to go to dinner with her and the zombies. "I know something happened to you, and I understand that you don't want to talk about it, but if you want to talk, talk to me. Even Wyatt is okay to talk to."
"I- it's fine, okay?" Max says a lot calmer now.
"Okay." Her sister sighs and smiles. "I want you to be at the new restaurant and 6.30. Text me if you need anything."
Max nods and leaves, walking out of the den and through the woods, enjoying the fresh air. She decides to stay in the woods for a little while and avoid any human being or zombie. She feels like she can't even trust the zombies anymore. Their practically humans, dead humans with green hair. She loves the green hair, though.
She walks around for a few hours until she checks her phone and realizes it's getting dark, so she checks her phone; it's 6.45 pm, so she begins walking back to the habited part of Seabrook, but in the way, she spots something in the dark behind the bushes. She glows her eyes, but they flicker from amber yellow to green to her own eyecolor. Then she coughs, and the figure comes closer to her as she holds her necklace.
She doesn't notice who the person is until she hits them in the face, and they stagger back, holding their jaw and grunting in pain. "Ouch!" The person yells before looking at her.
"Oh my God, I'm so sorry, I thought you were - I don't know what I thought you were. I am so sorry, Zed!" She's a shaking s little, mainly because her werewolf power is starting to drain away, but partially because she's shocked when she realizes that it's Zed who snuck up on her.
"I gotta stop sneaking up on people." He says, mainly to himself than to her. "Are you okay? Your eyes and moonstone started flickering, so..." He trails off.
"Yeah, don't worry. I don't know what it is but it'll be fine. What the hell are you even doing here in the woods?" Max says.
"I came to find you because I thought Willa told you to meet up with us at the restaurant, and since you got home soaked, Willa thought something happened to you or you were out on revenge." Zed rambles on.
"I just forgot the time. Why the hell would I get revenge?! I can't even glow my eyes without feeling sick! Let alone go after some dumb cheerleaders." She blurts out.
"What? You're sick, and you didn't think to tell anyone?"
"It doesn't matter! Let's just go to that stupid restaurant." Maxine yells as she starts walking her way through the woods.
"Fine, but if you don't tell your family about this soon, I will." Zed rushes behind her. "And will you please calm down? You'll only work yourself up, and it could cause you to feel sicker. Trust me."
"Fine, whatever. Just follow me."
