When I was sure that the girl was dead I pulled my sword from her body. I didn't let go of it while I wiped my face with my hands. Dry mud crumbled from my face and hands but at least my eyelids felt less heavy now.
I stared at the lifeless body that lay face down on the ground. While the death of my almost-murder had brought me satisfaction I felt pity for the discarded corpse.
She had found a useless death for a game.
I shouldn't feel pity for her. I'd given her the chance to surrender while she hadn't given me the same grace.I still didn't understand what had happened moments ago. Nothing made sense. Why did she let go when I had barely been alive? She had basically won.
I felt a presence come up next to me so I looked up. I stared into Sir Ashdracon's dark purplish eyes that appeared equally as disbelieving as I felt. Neither of us could understand what had just happened. It made me wonder if both of us had expected me to die. Probably he had also hoped for it. But who would interrupt his study then?
He kneeled down next to the girl's body and turned it over so that her mud covered face was facing the sky.
Even though I was sure that everyone knew that this body held no ounce of life, he put his fingers to her neck to check for a pulse.
After a moment he stood back up and called over a guard to come collect the body. I had done that... I bit my cheek to stop overthinking.Sir Ashdracon turned back to me. I had to look up at his head that was towering but his lips stayed ceiled.
I slightly tilted my head so that he would break the silence that was starting to become uncomfortable. I still didn't know if I had won. Maybe this had all been for nothing.
After being proved wrong so terribly in the middle of the match I didn't want to rule anything out.
Maybe I had broken some rule, anything could be used to disqualify me if Sir Ashdracon was up to it. And he hadn't seemed too fond of my participation anyway."Congratulations on winning this round of the tournament" he said roughly without looking at me. I let the air out that I had unknowingly held in scared anticipation. The breath turned into a sneeze from the dirt that was still in my nostrils. Yikes.
The sneeze was embarrassing by itself but what actually made me cringe was that I only narrowly escaped sneezing into Sir Ashdracon's face.I scrunched my nose before apologizing.
"Ugh, sorry, I'm drenched in dirt" I said and looked back up at his eyes in embarrassment. He ran his gaze over my body. "I see that" he stated drily with a slight smirk. Or maybe it was a disgusted snare.
I swear I even saw pointy fangs that reminded me of the girl I had just killed. It wasn't even the first time I'd seen them but sometimes they were just gone. Maybe I was hallucinating... would slowly everyone grow fangs until I went crazy, seeing the girl everywhere?"Might want to get that cleaned" he said while wiping a certain part on his cheek with his hand. Very funny, Sir.
"Oh this?" I said while wiping my cheek. I looked at my dirt covered hand. My face was probably even dirtier now.
