Make no mistake- I'm not innocent in this story. Let's go back to the beginning.
My childhood was spent in a humble neighbourhood in Italy, not exactly a place where fancy restaurants were a regular thing. Our meals mainly consisted of homegrown veggies, the fruit of our own labour in the backyard.
As for my parents, let's just say they had a pretty rocky relationship. They'd constantly argue and bicker, making for a tense home life. And divorce? That was never on the table. No way they were gonna do that with me in the picture, you know?
When I turned 22, my parents decided it was time to move to America, a place of endless possibilities and opportunities. They had grand plans for me - namely, finding a suitable suitor to arrange a marriage. I initially resisted their plans; the whole idea of being married off was rather unsettling.
That is until Henry came into my life. He was charming, and kind, and kept me entertained. Slowly, he won me over, and I eventually acquiesced to an arranged marriage with him.
All the wives around me appeared blissful, their lives filled with the joy of motherhood and domestic contentment. I couldn't relate to their happiness; our conversations lacked substance, and their experiences were alien to me. They had always been pampered, never left alone, and their pretty faces shielded them from the world's harsh realities. As I reflect on that time, it feels like my life began to unravel.
That night, as I sat at the dinner table with Henry, I began to notice a change in him. He was no longer the charming man I had married; instead, he had become controlling and manipulative. As he poured me a glass of wine.
Henry furtively spiked the wine he served me with his own blood, aiming to take advantage of my unsuspecting nature. However, the wine he used was a repugnant, bitter vintage.
