He takes photos on his camera as the T-Rex sinks its teeth into the goat. Ive seen this show before but each time I see it its still disturbing. Once the feeding is over, Gray asks if we can go see the Mosasaur and we agree, walking there.
"Hey so, what were you doing before this? I mean clearly not much since you are still with us but I'm curious." He puts his hand on his chin. I chuckle remembering my life just an hour ago.
"Well, I work here, with the Velociraptors. Well, today was pretty normal, but one of my tasks was to control a pig they used to lure the velociraptors together. Well long story short I let the pig out, a guy fell in the cage, and one of my coworkers had to go inside to help him out. I ran away so I wouldn't get fired, but to be fair when I come back I'm most definitely fired." I laugh explaining the whole thing. It really sounded ridiculous out loud but it was the truth and nothing but the truth.
"You work with velociraptors??" Gray asks excitedly. He looked at me with pure joy and I couldn't help but grin. Man he's so adorable. Bumping into him was definitely worth it.
"I do!" I smile at him. Zach seems amused by the situation. He looks at me with a half smile.
"Well what do you do?" Zach asks, not fully believing me. I can see the disbelief and honestly it does sound made up so I dont blame him.
"Well I do a variety of things. I clean them, I feed them, I prepare treats, Im supposed to look after the pig but you know... and some other basic tasks here and there. It a lot of work but its good work. I enjoy it." I smile. Too bad its going to be gone. Maybe they wont fire my ass if I beg hard enough. Maybe Owen will give then a letter of recommendation or something.
"Wow!!" Gray looks shocked, as his eyes widen. I grin even harder at how much joy this causes this little boy.
"How do you 'clean' a velociraptor?" Zach presses for more. It sounds crazy out of context but it's what I do.
"Basically I hose them down, and rub them with a towel. Not much cause its not like I can put one in a bath tub." I laugh thinking about putting Blue in a bathtub. We approach the fast lane and I give the lady my numbers for working here and she lets me in with the two. We sit down and get prepared for the show. They dangle a great white overtop the cage in hopes it will eat it. Zach us distracted with his phone so Gray shakes him.
"Zach! Zach! The Mosasaurus!" He says enthusiastically as it jumps out of the water and snags the shark and pulls it underwater. That in turn gets us soaked with water from the splash back. I look over and see Zach smiling and clapping along with everyone else. The bleachers begin to move downwards, to show a lower view of the giant dinosaur.
When the bleachers stop moving, we were now sitting in the Underwater Observatory and are watching an underwater view of the reptile. The Mosasaur grabs the last of the Great-White shark eating it whole then rapidly biting it.
"It has eighty-eight teeth!" He tells us, causing Zach and me to laugh. This kid must really be a dinosaur expert.
"Hey, you two wanna see something else cool?" He looks at us both, anticipating our answers.
"Yeah!" Gray yells still watching the Mosasaur as it chomps away on the now tiny looking shark.
"Duh!" I smile and look between the two. This has always been one of my favorite attractions to see, the Mosasaur is so beautiful. Once the bleachers come back up, Zach leads us to the Monorail. We flash our tickets and board, sitting near the back. Gray takes the window seat, Zach takes the middle, and I take the aisle seat. Me and Zach were talking about random things when Gray asked him a question.
"If Mom and Dad get divorced, will one of us be with Mom and the other with Dad?" Gray tears up. My eyes widen at the suddenness of the question, especially after all the excitement of today.
"What? Why would you say that?" Zach looks at me awkwardly and then back to Gray. I bite my lip in response not wanting to get involved.
"Because they are." Gray's voice breaks. I feel so bad for this boy.
"No, they're not getting... They're not getting divorced. Look. You haven't been around long enough. They've always been that way." Zach defends. He lowers his voice as a hint to Gray to also do.
"They get mail from two different lawyers." Gray speaks still not looking at Zach. I look down at the floor suddenly feeling extremely out of place.
"That doesn't mean anything." Zach shakes his head, awkwardly defending his parents to his broken brother.
"I googled. They're divorce lawyers." Gray's eyes finally meet Zach's as a tear escapes from his eyes."All right, whatever. You know what? It doesn't matter, okay? I'm gonna be gone in two years anyway. I mean, all my friends' parents are divorced." Zach lists coldly. I fight the urge to tell him about my parents but its not my place so I keep quiet. Gray starts to cry.
"Hey, knock it off. You're gonna cry? Look. You're gonna get two of everything, right?
You're gonna get two birthdays, two Thanksgivings, two..." Zach tries to reassure him horribly, forgetting the major holidays."I don't want two of everything." Gray shakes his head still crying. I sigh feeling for him. I get him, I wish I had one of everything too.
"Yeah, well, it's not up to you. All right? There's a point you have to grow up." Zach spits out and leans back in his chair. I still don't say anything, just trying to not be awkward about it. The floor seems oddly interesting to me now.
1081 words! poor gray 😭
