36 - we already cared for that

"i'm sorry for yelling at you earlier..", nick apologizes quietly, as him and alexis sit in the hallway of the grand oak hospital, waiting for someone to give updates.

after a quick examination by a doctor, matt had to get an emergency surgery. again.

"don't worry, nick. it's fine", alexis says and smiles softly, as he takes his hand. "no it's not. i'm constantly fucking things up", he whispers desperately. alexis is confused: "you fucked nothing up, nick. don't say that."

"it's true..", he says but alexis knows that he wants to tell her something, but he seems to be afraid.

"if you want something to get off your chest, tell me. we'll figure it out, okay?", she says, trying to comfort him. because she still holds his hand, she notices that he's shaking.

"i probably saw the one who knocked out sam..", he starts to speak up, "i saw someone walking past the door of the stairwell i was in. it was a split second, but enough for me to notice that something was up with him. but he looked nothing like wesley's workers did. he looked.. homeless. and i wanted to follow him, but i also didn't want to leave my spot and risk anything."

"well, maybe it was just a dude. maybe he wasn't the one. and corey should've noticed him too. we are a team, we were all in our spots and we all did everything we could to make it right. so don't worry about that. but we definitely have to talk about that guy with corey, sam and everybody else. i can do it if you can't", alexis says calmly, which indeed helps nick to calm down.

"no, i wanna tell them. i have to. and i will, as soon as i get the opportunity", nick states determined, "and i hope they won't kill me."

"they won't, nick. don't worry too much.", she smiles and nudges his side.

"can i ask you something?", he asks after a moment of silence. "sure", alexis replies and nick sighs: "am i a bad person for being excited for today?"

"what? no! we all were. this day is the beginning of a new chapter for all of us. and that's always something to be excited about. and you didn't know what was to come. don't be to hard to yourself. you're just a baby-gangster", she chuckles as she finishes her sentence and nick rolls his eyes: "don't call me that. ever. again."

"i'm sorry, but it's kinda true. mandy and i are doing shit like this for over a year. and colby and his gang probably for multiple years. the first times are always exciting, because you just aren't aware of what could happen. you always think about the good outcome, and it takes some time to be realistic and to have the possible bad consequences in the back of your mind", alexis explains honestly.

nick let's out a big sigh again: "can i ask you another question?" alexis nods.

"is it bad that this situation makes me want to get better in shit like this?", he asks, kinda ashamed of his confession.

"well, it's bad because you'd put yourself in danger. but on the other hand it shows that you are an ambitious person. and i know that your intention is not to harm people, but justice. so no, it's not bad. but i wouldn't recommend", alexis tells him and he nods.

"you are an amazing person and i truly hope that matt will marry you one day", nick states with a smile and alexis jokes: "i would be honored to marry one straight version of you."

suddenly, cece comes out of the door which leads to the operation rooms. "guys", she says as they both stand up, "whoever beat him up made his esophagus rupture. he'll be fine, the doctor fixed it. he'll need some rest for a few days, preferably in here. but the guy who did this and all the other bruises he has, has to go to jail. must be a psychopath."
