"M!" Carter ran down the crowded high-school hallway.

"What's up?" Marisa asked, standing at her locker.

"Look at this," Carter held up a poster advertisement for prom.

"Prom?" Marisa asked, confused. "I didn't think you were going."

"No, not that," Carter paused. "Josh is in charge of planning it."

"Josh?" Marisa gaped, grabbing the poster from Carter.

"He'll make himself king, and you queen," Carter stated, a look of disgust on her face.

Josh was Marisa's ex-boyfriend, they broke up after he tried to force her. Carter walked in on them in time to get him off.

"What am I going to do?" Marisa leaned against the locker. "I really wanted to go to prom."

"Don't worry," Carter said, embracing her. "I'll make everything okay."
