"Who are you?!" Marisa screamed, struggling in her chair. "Where's Carter?!"

"Marisa," The man said patiently, holding his clipboard. "I need you to calm down."

"Okay," Marisa stopped struggling. "I just want to know where I am."

"You're home," The man said.

"No, I'm not," Marisa shook her head franticly. "I live with my wife on meadows street."

"You don't have a wife, Marisa." The man said calmly.

"You're insane," Marisa began struggling against the chair. "It's illegal to hold someone hostage-"

"I'm not holding you hostage," The man said as if he was talking to a child. "You're here to get help."

"Help?!" Marisa began to calm down. "Help for what?"

"For your condition." The man said, taking out a pen.

"My condition?" Marisa asked. "Am I sick?"

"Yes," The man nodded.

"Well," Marisa leaned forward in her chair. "I need to call Carter, she must be worried sick."

"There is no Carter, Marisa," The man said. "You've been imagining her for most your life."

"What?" Marisa shook her head. "That's not true, I-"

"Have you ever seen anyone besides yourself with Carter?" The man asked.

"No, but-"

"Have you ever been to Carter's house?" The man asked.

"No, but-"

"Have you noticed the way people look at you and Carter in public?" He asked.

"That's different, they were just being asses about our relationship." Marisa shook her head.

"No, Marisa," He began writing on his clipboard. "They were looking at you because you were talking to yourself, kissing air, and going on and on about a wife you didn't have," The man looked up from his writing. "That's why you're here."

Marisa sat in her room, her head in her hands. How is this possible? How can Carter not be real? Is this a joke? Is this a dream?

"What are you thinking about?" Carter asked, suddenly next to her on the bed.

"They said you weren't real..." Marisa sobbed. "And now I'm trapped here, they think I'm crazy!"

"Don't worry," Carter embraced her. "I'll make it all go away."
