TORN BETWEEN THE GUILT OF LEAVING AND THE SOMEWHAT OVERWHELMING NEED TO HELP, Casey hides in the left-hand subsection of the jet. The scene she'd overheard repeating over and over in her head, though, more specifically, two sentences.
"We have to leave her."That had been Steve, Casey has already lowered her trust in him.
"I— We can't betray her trust."This was Tony, Casey hadn't expected it.
Her knees are tucked to her chest and she has her sleeve pulled past her hand, allowing her to mess with the end of the sleeve. She's chewing on the collar of her shirt, too, though she doesn't realise. It's an unconscious habit she's picked up and not yet noticed.
It's incredibly dark in the jet, but Casey's too focused on other things to panic about that. Besides, it should be nearly morning, so the natural light will fill the contraption soon enough.
"We have to leave her."
"I— We can't betray her trust."
The words still float around her mind. She's trying to find any possible way that makes it so Tony didn't mean it, but she can't figure it out. There are no lines to read between, there are no words to twist. There's just the stutter. I. I can't betray her trust, is what she assumes he was going to say, but she wonders what else it could've lead to. There are too many and too few possibilities and it's overwhelming.
She closes her eyes, not that there's any light to block out, but it helps her focus. She keeps her mind fixed on what she's going to be helping with. Casey isn't too sure what she's just signed herself up to. Natasha, Clint and Steve are taking the jet, going to see a woman known as Helen Cho. She remembers Tony saying he'll go to the Nexus and the eyepatch man had mentioned taking Banner. Since she's in the jet, Casey assumes she'll be going with Natasha, Clint and Steve, though she's much more nervous about going with them. There's more of them, so there are potentially more chances to be spotted.
Her hiding spot isn't the worst ever, but it certainly isn't top tier. If she happens to make a noise and even one of them takes a quick look into the subsection, that person will definitely find her.
A mechanical, almost whirring sound rings out through the jet, signalling that the ramp is descending the the three Avengers are finally getting onboard. Casey sucks in a breath, as if that will keep her invisible. Natasha talks to Clint, though Casey can't hear Steve. She assumes he's just not talking as she can hear three sets of footsteps.
The ramp closes up and Casey hears the gentle vibrations of the jet's startup. She presses her hands to the floor and opens her eyes; the jet is now brighter as Casey assumes someone's turned on some kind of light.
