Since I have my book of Japanese Urban Legends, I was looking through the books to find a legend I could use as scenario inspiration.
There were a couple I looked through until I found one that gave me a good dose of inspiration. This being Blue Crayon, though it's also alternatively known as Red Crayon.
The legend is so popular it has a Vocaloid song called "Crayon" based on it:

*Warning, the song lyrics are quite saddening and dark*

Ship:

Ship of Choice

Charlie would feature/have the role, of a main character.

For this scenario, I will also be taking some inspiration from the Ju-On franchise, this being that when someone dies a vengeful death, a curse is born, and those who come in contact with said curse will fall victim to it as well in some way.

Scenario:

A young couple had recently moved into a beautiful home. It was considered a dream home to most. And they had gotten the home cheap, far cheaper than it was worth.
They just assumed that perhaps the previous owners of the home wanted to be rid of the home quickly so they could move onto their new home quickly.
They were partially right in such an assumption.

The first few nights in the home were quiet and relaxed.
But things soon changed.
At night, it sounded as if there was the pitter-patter of small feet on a floor. It sounded as if the feet were circling around a small room.
Then there was the sound of something rubbing against the wall. Neither the girl nor her boyfriend could figure what it was that was making the sound.
They tried to brush it off, but they couldn't, because they heard it almost every night.

As time went on, the couple began to fight, with the man getting mad at the girl very easily.
He even started to grab at her and threaten her, and it terrified her.
She didn't understand... What caused this? They had been so happy when they moved in. Things had felt perfect.
Now it was like she hardly knew him.

One night, after the man slapped his girlfriend across the face, hard enough she had begun to cry, hard enough that there'd probably be a bruise, he slinked off to be alone.
Trembling, the girl just stood in place, staring blankly down the Hallway as tears streaked down her cheeks. That's when she heard it again.
The patter of those tiny feet. The rubbing on the wall.
As she stared down the Hallway, she realized the Hallway was oddly short, and the wallpaper looked messy and bumpy compared to the rest of the well-placed design.
There was enough room for another room... How had they not realized it before?

Through bleary eyes, she walked down the hall, and she placed her hands on the wall... She felt the wallpaper, and through it, she felt the outline of a door.
As her boyfriend sat and watched TV in their living room, she headed to the kitchen and grabbed a knife.
Soon, she walked back through the Hallway, not realizing that as she did, a board creaked, alerting her boyfriend that she was up to something...
And as she cut the wallpaper open at the outline of the door, he watched her, anger beginning to build in him. What gave her the right to tamper with and destroy the house /he/ had paid for? He took care of her. She should have been grateful.

As she got the outline of the door cut out, she began to work on prying the door open, her nails breaking, fingers bleeding, as she pulled on the door that felt stuck.
Pain racked her small bloodied hands, but she refused to give up, she kept pulling, prying, even using the knife to chop away at the door... Something in her mind wouldn't allow her to stop.
All as her boyfriend continued to watch, his anger rising and rising.

Finally, she fell back when she lost her grip on the door, her eyes still teary as she cussed in anger, certain the door wouldn't open without a key, a key they didn't have...
That was until the door creaked open as she propped on her elbows before she pushed to her feet.

Staring into the room, the girl felt as if she'd choke... On the wall, in blue and red crayon, there were the repeated pleadings from a child, begging to be freed, that they wouldn't do it again, that they were hungry, that they were scared, that they didn't want to die.

The young woman was so distracted that she didn't realize how close her boyfriend was to her.

She didn't realize it until his hands had clasped down on her shoulders, his nails digging in, making her yelp in pain.
His front was roughly pressed into her back, she could feel the belt of his pants pushing so hard into her skin it'd leave a mark, his chest so pressed against her that she could feel his heavy breathing...
Was she going to die?
She was scared, she felt like he was about to kill her.

But, that wasn't the only thing she felt.
Just moments later, she felt small arms wrapped around her, and when she looked down, she felt the warmth of a hug that contrasted with the pain of her boyfriend's nails scraping into her flesh.

As she stared down at the boy, her boyfriend was suddenly startled out of his anger-fueled focus girlfriend when he heard the little boy speak, finally seeing the child himself.

"Mommy, Daddy, please, don't lock me in there again."

But... The past owners didn't have a child. Was this little boy even alive? What exactly was he?
And did it matter? Because the girl could still feel her boyfriend's nails digging into her skin, even as he looked at the little boy.

In case the plot is confusing(For Kiku and her boyfriend's relationship changing), it's likely that Charlie's presence, caused them to be affected by/assume the role of Charlie's past parents, or that Charlie's anger concerning his unfair death/treatment, led to his spirit causing a slight possession of Kiku and her boyfriend making them fight.
And the reason Kiku is the only one physically harmed is because it's likely that Charlie's mother is who locked him in the room, and so, he saw his father as the more 'innocent' of his two parents, causing his anger to be more directed towards the woman than the man.

In this case, the freeing of Charlie from that room likely lessened the effects on the two. But, until Charlie forgives his mother and father, which is now Kiku and her boyfriend, Kiku will still have to deal with her boyfriend's anger and mistreatment since he'd still be affected by Charlie's presence/anger/emotions.
This doesn't make Charlie evil either. Instead, he'd be similar to an Onryo, particularly Kayako and Toshio Saeki from Ju-On.
Just thought I should give some explanation on that part of the scenario.
