chapter six
CARRIGES AND CARNATIONSPRESENT DAY:
june 5th, 2310After what could only be described as ages, the stylists were finally done and Lyra thought she looked the most beautiful she had ever looked before. Which wasn't hard considering food is a privilege in district four but it's something nonetheless.
She was now stood in a room with just Irati. Although the ocean styled dress was slightly stiff and tough to move in she still loved it, she looked so luxurious and she only wished that her grandmother was here to see her."Thank you Ira so much, you did an amazing job" Lyra smiled warmly at the stylists
"of course i did, i am a professional you know!" Came Ira's answer,
if anyone else had said that she would've thought of them as a person with a very high ego but Ira had every right to be proud, he was pretty damn awesome at what he did and i suppose that's how he got rewarded with the job of being district fours personal stylist which is a lifetime accomplishment. it was something Lyra could only dream of, she would love to become a clothes designer just like her grandmother.
"Right, you best get going. the parade will be starting any moment" Irati said curtly
"Right, well i'll see you soon enough for the interviews." The girl waved goodbye as Irati's lips curled up into a sad smile
"Correct, go show them who the real star is! Don't let anyone forget the girl from district 4" Irati exclaimed as the dark haired songbird left the room.
"Hello Finnick, where's my brother?" Lyra asked gently, a slight crease in her forehead caused by her folded eyebrows.
"Oh he should be done any moment, i just saw Serafina enter his stylists room so i assume he's getting a stern talking to... you best be expecting one soon, Serafina takes the representation of district 4 seriously so try to grab attention okay?" the dirty blonde fisher reminded Lyra.
"Of course, Serafina is rather scary so i'll keep that in mind! Thank you Finnick" The girl nodded gratefully as Finnick's mouth twitched up into a warm smile.
"No problem Kiddo"
"It's seven year age gap! Why the kiddo?"
"It pisses you off, which is funny so it's staying" Finnick chuckled, his pink tinted lips pointing up into a smirk showing off his defined dimples.
"Mr Odair, you best watch your language! There are children near" Lyra giggled.
"The children is you, your barely 15" Finnick crossed his arms, eagerly waiting for the younger girls reaction.
"Right, there was no need for that" Lyra jokingly poured but the silly smile was wiped off of her face at the thought of being humbled like that even if he wasn't being serious.
"Ly!" a deep voice cracked from a dark corridor.
"Canny, you took ages! i was getting grey hairs" Lyra laughed, finding herself quite funny which quickly died down once she was met with Canopus' blank stare.
"Pfft, you're no fun" The brunette let out a breathe before she started fixing her twins tie "Seriously, how did you manage to mess up your tie already?" Lyra scoffed jokingly.
"Sorry mum" Canopus quipped sarcastically to which he received a close up view of Lyra's middle finger.
"Well, you better not pull anything like that on your chariots" Serafina appeared with a cocked eyebrow aimed at the younger girl.
"Canopus deserved it!" Lyra pointed a manicured finger at her brother.
"And suddenly we're nine again"
"Shush"
"Both of you shush before i go into early retirement" Finnick leaned a tanned palm against his forehead.
"Enough chitchat children, places!" Serafina clapped her hands together as if expecting something spectacular to happen but instead Canopus and Lyra stared at her oddly.
"Oh, right! come on Cano" Lyra smiled before grabbing his wrist and dragging him towards their designated carriage
Once they arrived the rest of the tributes started gathering around their own carriages.
They heard something of a warning from one of the backstage workers and began to board their carriages hearing the loud countdown that was surely drowned out by the music lingering outside— Lyra could hear the cheerful cries of the audience and she wondered if they were happy, she wondered if they were content with watching children fight to the death.
The games had always made Lyra feel sick to her stomach and now with the lingering feeling of knowing that it will soon be her fighting for her life.. well let's just say it didn't make her feel any better.
Lyra was thrown from her thoughts just as she was almost thrown from her carriage as it began moving unexpectedly, she gripped Canopus' arm hard enough to bruise it for days to come, she felt bad but she would've felt worse had she not used his arm to steady herself,
after all had she not, she would've been thrown overboard infront of the entirety of the Capitol. Lyra looked out at the adoring 'fans' and froze— she couldn't do this.. how is one meant to act, but clearly Canopus' knew what he was doing because he stood there waving and blowing kisses at women and men alike, Lyra had to hold back her gag at her brothers attempt at flirting to get sponsors, but then she realised she may have to grovel slightly if she wanted to live and unlike the careers she was not beneath grovelling.
So Lyra began waving and catching roses, then she caught a sweet pea steam so she snapped it off and shoved it behind her ear then using the broken vine she tied the roses and other assortment of flowers she received from them into a beautiful beaming bouquet, as she reached the end her and Canopus locked arms and she decided to throw the bouquet into the stands where a surprising amount of people flocked to achieve the memorabilia.
Lyra is almost certain she spotted a small cat fight too.
by the end of the day Lyra grew tired of hearing how well she'd done so she retreated to her chambers only to be met by the iron reminder that he is onto her.
