I pat the band-aid softly after placing it over where I had given the man his flu shot, earning a thank you and a smile as he leaves the exam room. It's been a generally productive day, I woke up early and got right to work giving general checkups to everyone in the shelter who wanted or needed one. Giving flu shots, or other vaccinations we had that had been very kindly donated by local hospitals.
Wiping down the exam bed and counter become a quick routine in-between patients, getting used to the layout of the room and where everything is. It's nice, honestly. People are much kinder, it's much calmer, I feel more appreciated and not like a cog in a machine.
"Astoria, dear, do you know anything about plants?" Ms. Parker's voice catches my attention away from my thoughts, hearing her get closer to the room and settle in the doorway.
"Depends?" I turn, smiling at Ms. Parker as I take off and throw away the gloves I'm wearing. "I know enough, what do you need?"
"I just don't have time today to go all the way up to the roof and water the veggies we have growing," She sighs, shaking her head. "There's a few things I have to get done before Martin gets here."
"I can water them no problem, Ms. Parker," I smile, nodding my head. "I haven't had to in a long time, but I do love gardening."
"You're an angel, dear." She walks forward, hugging me tightly before pulling back and looking at me. "You're sure I can't set you up with my nephew? He's your age, and a scientist." She wiggles her eyebrows, patting my shoulder.
"I'm sure," I laugh, shaking my head. "I appreciate the sentiment."
She leaves not too long after, telling me where I can find the watering can and thanking me again for the help, reminding me to call her 'May', not Ms. Parker.
The sun shines brightly as I water the plants growing in the large handmade planters on the roof, the hot sun on my skin contrasting with the cold breeze blowing my hair around. These are my favorite kind of days. Chilly, but sunny. It's a good balance.
It doesn't take long to water all the plants that need it, and I'm done before I know it. I set down the watering can, Stepping back with my hands on my hips to look at the plants with a little nod, content with the green leaves swaying in the breeze.
The sun is too nice not to enjoy for a few minutes, I think. I make my way over to the railing, resting my arms on the metal bar, and leaning most of my weight on them as I look out into the city.
I've gotten a few emails back from friends and old co-workers about donations. One of my friends who works in a grocery store around here said every two weeks they get rid of a whole bunch of bread products, which they'd be happy to deliver here instead of throwing away.
"Hey there," A familiar voice makes me turn my head to the side, seeing Spider-Man hanging upside down, holding a to-go cup of coffee right side up. "Coffee?" He holds it out toward me, and I smile as I take it.
"Thank you," It's still heavy, and the lid is pristine. "Did you swing here without spilling any?"
"What do you take me for, an amateur?" He flips, perching on the railing next to me, looking out over the city with me. "Of course, I didn't spill any."
