"Okay, ready?" I hold the little boy's shoulder in my hands, preparing him for me to pop it back into place. He had fallen out of a tree he was climbing, and his shoulder got dislocated. He nods, looking up at me with big tears in his eyes. "One, two,"
I pop it back into place quickly, and he gasps, looking down at his shoulder with big round eyes as I give it a soft pat. "All done!" I cheer. "You did wonderfully, I think you've earned a special prize."
I grab the basket of small toys I bought a while ago from the cupboard, walking back over to him as he rubs his shoulder. The worst part about having something dislocated; is having it dislocated. Once you pop it back into its socket, the relief you feel overtakes any leftover pain.
By the time he sees all the toys he gets to choose from, he's forgotten all about it, and is happy as can be. They leave a few minutes later after I've made sure nothing else is wrong, the mom hugging me tightly before she walks out with her son in her arms.
My little clock buzzes, letting me know I'm all done working for the day. I sigh, slipping off my gloves and throwing them away. It's been a long day, but a good one. More and more people are learning about the services provided here, which means very few breaks between patients for me.
Tap tap tap
I turn, seeing Peter in the doorway, tapping on the door the same way he'd tap on the window at night when he used to stop by as Spider-Man. I smile as he walks into the room, watching as he plops himself down on one of the chairs.
"Hey, Stori."
"Hey, Pete." I turn, grabbing the basket of toys to put them back in the cupboard. "Whatcha doing?"
"Well, I've been here for the last two hours helping May with stuff around the shelter, but I noticed it was time for you to get off work." He shrugs, watching me as I pull out the sanitary wipes. "So, now I'm coming to bug you."
"Oh, I didn't realize you were here." I wipe down the counters, thinking it's sweet he came to say hi after my shift was done, even if he was here anyway. "I would've come bothered you if I knew."
"That's why you didn't know I was here." He jokes, chuckling as I shake my head. "I like seeing the patients come in and out of here, it's like magic."
"What do you mean?" I finish up the little bit of cleaning I have, turning around to face Peter.
"They're just always so miserable when they walk in, but they walk out with a smile every single time." He grins at me, standing up from his chair. "Even if the problem isn't fixed, you at least always make them smile. I think that's cool."
That is probably the sweetest thing I have ever been told in my whole life. I didn't realize he noticed the people coming in and out of there, let alone whether I had made them smile or not.
Peter always seems to notice things about me. Like when he told me how I pick at my nails when I'm nervous, or how he always seems to know the moment I get tired at the end of the day. I've never had someone pay so much attention to such little details before, things I didn't realize I did.
