Aurora
I brushed my hair in the mirror quickly making sure it's perfect. Everything had to be perfect today, I had to be perfect. This school couldn't end up being the same. I wouldn't let it.
The people at my last school were... they were mean to say the least, even the teachers. And at the end of last school year I decided I couldn't take it anymore. The teasing and bullying I couldn't go another year, let alone two, trapped there.
That's why I decided to apply for Churchill Academy. I needed to start over somewhere different. I applied for a scholarship because I knew my parents wouldn't pay the 35k tuition so it was my only chance. No words could explain how excited I was when I opened the email and read that I got in.
I got up from my desk and quickly grabbed all my open textbooks and stuffed them into my bag. They've been on my desk all summer. I had to make sure I was caught up with all the material before the semester started. I didn't want to be behind, this school is known to be more rigorous and if I get anything less than an A at the end of each semester, I'm out.
That may sound like a lot of pressure but that's what I'm good with. I thrive under pressure.
I grabbed the book on my nightstand that I started last night. "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley. I decided last night it would probably be better to read and calm my nerves before I fall asleep instead of cramming in more unnecessary information.
I walked to my bedroom door ready to leave but quickly glanced around my room to make sure I didn't forget anything. My bed was unmade and my pajamas were still on the floor but that isn't anything I couldn't fix when I got home.
I opened my bedroom door and walked downstairs to see my mother sitting in the living room watching TV.
"Hey mom, I'm ready." I said standing by the door.
"Ready for what?" Her eyes never moved from the TV.
"School?"
"I thought you took the bus."
"I did but not this year. I talked to you about this." I tried to hide the annoyance in my voice. "I'm at a new school and the bus doesn't come here."
"I would've remembered if you did." Would you? "Talk to your father and see if he can take you."
I turned around and bit my tongue. Now's not the time to start arguments. I had to get to school on time today.
I put down my backpack by the front door and walked back upstairs to my parents room and knocked on their door.
No answer.
"Dad?"I said testing the doorknob to see if it was locked. It wasn't.
After a moment of silence I cracked it open. All the curtains in the room were drawn shut, so the room was pitch black.
"Dad?"
The smell of the room was awful. There was a pile of clothes in front of my feet and a beer can on the ground. And that's all I could see. There was a reason I avoided this room.
I reach to turn on the lights but I decide against it. Last time I did that I got shoved down the stairs. I learned my lesson. And anyways he's probably passed out drunk.
I shut the door quietly and walked back downstairs.
"He's sleeping." I said.
"What? You think I'm not busy."
well... I side eyed the tv unintentionally and she caught it.
"You fucking bitch!" She yelled and I jumped a little surprised by her change of tone. "You don't know how hard it is to deal with both you and your father. I deserve a break."
