6: The Past is Haunting

Kate was pacing in the living room. She was freaking out. The only thing she could have possibly thought of the past couple days was her girlfriend's cancer. It hurt so much, she was so scared for Yelena.

"Kate, sweetheart. Please stop pacing." Lena said.

"Mom, it's not fair. Why does Yelena have to get cancer?"

"I don't know. Unfortunately, these things are out of our control."

"I can't lose her mom. She's been there for me for so long. She was there for me after I was attacked. I-"

"Kate, please calm down."

"I can't, mom."

Lena got up from the couch and walked towards her.

"Hey, I know, this is really scary. You're scared for your girlfriend. I am too. I'm scared for Yelena and my own girlfriend."

"What's going on with Kara?"

"Well, she's still having problems with Leslie. And yesterday, I found the two of them and Leslie had a tight grip on Kara's arm. The look Kara had makes me believe there was a lot more to their story than what she let on."

"Wait, do you think Leslie abused her?"

"I don't know. I hope not, but I'll help her through it. Also, Laurel called."

"She did? What did she say?" Kate asked, knowing Laurel was her mother's lawyer friend.

"She said she will help us in getting this divorce settled. Oh, and Sara and Ava are coming over next week."

"Really! I miss them so much. They're so much fun. But why?"

"Well, Laurel and Sara are sisters. Also, word has finally got to them about your attack."

"I don't think those two guys, whoever they are, are going to last much longer." Kate joked.

Lena just dropped off Kate at her therapy appointment. Kelly gave her a sad smile as she opened the door for her.

"Hi, Kate. How are you?"

Kate just let out an exasperated laugh.

"Yeah, sorry. How's Yelena?"

"You know?" Kate asked, caught off guard.

"Don't forget, Kara's my sister-in-law."

"Oh yeah. Sorry."

"Kate, don't worry about it. You've had a lot on your mind these past couple days."

"I've had a lot on my mind for the past couple months. With my attack on the subway, to battling with my feelings towards Yelena and thinking she was dating someone else, and now this? Fucking hell."

Kelly put a gentle hand on Kate's hand.

"It's ok to be worried or even overwhelmed."

"Why can't I just be whelmed?"

Kelly chuckled a little bit.

"Can I ask you something else?" Kelly asked.

"Yeah."

"How have you been sleeping? Are you still having nightmares of your attack?"

"Not as often, but yes. These sessions are helping, and of course mom and Yelena too."

"And how are things going with Yelena?"

"Great, well, you know, as great as things can be with fucking Leukemia."
