Kasidee Winters never had an easy life. From the harsh storm the day she was born that destroyed most of her house and her father, she had to fight for survival. Even at a young age, she had to work in the farms and orchards of her district, District 11. When her family was hungry in between the tesserae, she was the one who had to sneak into the warehouses and take what she could. When Kasidee thought it couldn't get any worse, her brother was reaped for the Hunger Games. Every single day she would watch the television with anticipation and her baby sister while their single mother struggled to keep them alive. When her brother was killed by a deranged tribute, Kasidee felt crushed. It hurt to lose a sibling, especially one she loved so much at only eight years old. Never did she expect that the misfortune of her family would continue.
In the orchard, her mother was climbing up a tree to pick a few apples when the branch broke out from under her. Fortunately, she survived the fall, but not unscathed. The impact severely injured her spine, paralyzing her from the waist down. What use was a farmer who couldn't walk? At only 10 years old, Kasidee was being forced to fight for not only her own survival, but the survival of her mother, and her five year old sister, Kristyl. Every night, just to get enough food to scrape through, Kasidee would sneak out into the warehouses. Overtime, they become more heavily guarded. So, in the dead of night, Kasidee was forced to sneak into the farms to pick her own food directly from the orchard trees, with penalty of death. Every night she'd take one of her mother's sturdy kitchen knives, just as a precaution. On a lucky night, she could find a few groosling eggs in a nest. On a bad night, Kasidee would come home only to find the center of the fruit was rotten. In the winter Kasidee feared that her skinny sister with her hollow cheeks would fall asleep and never wake up. But she had to keep fighting. It was all the Capitol's fault.
