Aria casually scrolled on her phone while she sipped wine at her best friend Sofia's apartment. They hadn't settled on where to go out yet tonight, the Dybbuk or the Lohan Club, but the party city of Athen's beckoned.
"So show me a picture of this new dude you are into," said Sofia, topping off her glass, "and will I get to meet him tonight?"
Aria's face took on a dreamy and far-away expression.
"I don't know, he is pretty introverted and will only lurk in the shadows if you know what I mean," said Aria.
"Ooh, dark and mysterious," said Sophia as Aria handed her the phone. Glancing down, Sofia tried not to shudder at the picture of Aria's new beau. She handed the phone quickly back to her friend and quickly tried to think of something positive to say.
"Wow, quite a six-pack on that one," said Sofia.
"He's so strong and misunderstood," said Aria.
"I thought you were into Theo?" Sofia asked. I mean who isn't into Theo, thought Sofia, handsome, rich, good family. "It seems like he's bound for the road to success."
Aria got a funny look on her face and her cheeks flushed.
"I heard Theo left town and won't be back anytime soon. Something about 'saving the children' or some bullshit," said Aria, resuming scrolling on her phone and noticeably avoiding eye contact with her friend, but she continued. "And Phae posted on Tic Tok that he is a two-timing a-hole, and Helen said he is a pedophile."
Aria's strong words took Sofia by surprise, as a romantic Aria usually gave men the benefit of the doubt.
"So what is your new man like–hopefully not as bullish as Theo."
Again Aria's face turned a bit more crimson than it should have despite the third glass of wine she was now pouring herself.
"I mean some people think he is a bit...uncivilized like some kind of animal or something, but he told me I'm the most beautiful woman he's ever..."
This time Aria's blush gave her secret away.
"You've already slept with him!" said Sofia. "You go girl!" Sofia topped off her wine again and took an enthusiastic slug. "So...how was he?"
"Hung like a horse!" exclaimed Aria, clearly tipsy now.
"Well, let's go out to the clubs and find him," said Sofia.
Sofia and Aria fixed their hair and makeup, stumbled out of the apartment and out onto the street. They stopped for more wine and drank it together out of a paper bag. Soon they were sitting together on a crowded bus, swaying with a boisterous weekend crowd.
"Can I tell you a secret," said Aria leaning into Sofia's ear. Sofia nodded eagerly.
"Theo was going to kill Asterius and I was going to help him by giving him string to get out of the labyrinth, but then I kind of fell for the minotaur. We had, like, a magnetic attraction for each other, so I gave him a heads up. Together we cut the string and left Theseus behind with those kids who had been posting social media lies about Asterius eating children."
"What is wrong with some people and their need to create conspiracy theories online?" exclaimed Sophia. Then she got a sly look in her eye. "Maybe he has a brother he could introduce me to."
_______
A/N: A modern rewrite of the Greek myth of Ariadne who helped Theseus kill the minotaur and escape the labyrinth. But then he went and dumped her shortly after! Maybe Theseus wasn't a hero after all and the minotaur wrongfully accused of eating all those kids. And as you can see below he was quite fit.
