Chapter Two
Ross looked down at her desk and at the captain bars Andy had so selflessly left behind. Why does she have to be so God damn selfless when she deserves this the most? Ross wondered to herself.
When Andy got to work the next shift, she had a heavy heart. Her idea had been approved by Osman. She wanted to get to the station before anyone else so she could go into the locker room without being hounded with questions. Andy looked at herself in the mirror and a frown took place on her face. She sighed. This is for Vic. This is for Vic. This is for Vic. Keeping your family together is more important than a title. Andy sighed again. This was all such bullshit. Osman was just another stupid politician. Just as bad as Dixon and others before him.
Andy heard a couple of voices coming up the stairs and quickly went from the mirror to the locker room to close her locker and made the short walk to the beanery, grabbing a drink, making it look like she had been in the beanery for a while now.
"Hey, Cap" Ben greeted, and Andy's heart pinged.
"Good morning, Warren," Andy said as politely as she could, trying to ignore the hurt filling her, knowing she may never be a captain again.
10 minutes later the whole team was in the beanery, laughing and eating. Travis and Vic had just come in and were just going to sit down when Andy cleared her throat.
"Guys, I have an announcement to make," Andy told them, her face showing no emotion.
"What is it?" Travis asked, grabbed Vic's hand, thinking it was about her.
"It's good news, you can breathe easy Travis," Andy told him, giving him a small smile. "I talked to Chief Ross and Mayor Osman after the last shift," Andy told them, ignoring the pain she was feeling she pushed through. "He's agreed to not fire Vic and they've found funds to keep Crisis One alive." Andy looked at Vic and gave her a small smile too.
Everyone went up to Vic and hugged her and when Maya and Robert walked over to the beanery island their eyes fell on Andy's single lieutenant bars.
Maya looked over at the group before looking back at Andy, this time Andy noticed "What?" Andy asked unaware Maya had seen her collar.
"What the hell did you do?" Maya hissed, being sure to keep her voice down.
Andy looked at the group in front of her. How happy they were. How Vic looked like a weight was lifted off of her. Maybe it was worth it. Andy thought and then looked at Maya. "I did what was needed to not lose another member of my family," Andy told Maya numbly and walked past her to a bunk room.
Maya followed Andy, trying to catch up before she could lock the door but unfortunately, Andy was faster. Maya knocked on the door. "Andy, please open the door. We need to talk about this." Maya tried but no answer came. She looked behind her. "Is there anything you can do?" Robert looked at Maya and shook his head and walked away. Maya sighed and put her ear to the door, listening for any sniffling but she was surprised that she didn't hear anything when she knew her friend was one to wear her heart on her sleeve. "Andy, please open the door," Maya begged. "I know you think you helped the team but there was no need to go this drastic." Maya knew she wasn't saying the right things and wasn't shocked when she received no response from Andy. "Andy, please." Maya tried one last time before putting her ear to the door again, this time she did hear sniffling and her heart cracked. Andy had been working up to captain for seven years and every time she came close, something got in the way of her dream. "Look, being captain is your dream, I know that everyone here knows that. Just please come out so we can talk about you taking a demotion for her." What Maya didn't know was that Travis was behind her, causing her to jump and freeze. "I..um...Travis..."
"What did you just say?" Travis asked, not quite sure if he heard right.
Maya sighed and rubbed her forehead, grabbed Travis' wrist and pulled him to a different bunk room. "Andy gave up being captain to make budget room for Vic's salary and some money to keep Crisis One going." Maya told him and she would've laughed at how his eyes bugged out if the situation weren't so serious. "at least I think that's what happened, I haven't really gotten anything out of her." Maya finished and Travis started pacing in the small room.
"Andy gave up her dream so that Vic could stay at the station?" Travis asked, trying to understand this. Maya nodded. "She's been working her way towards this for seven years though. She really just gave it all up?"
Maya was going to answer him when there was a knock on the door and when they saw it was Vic they stilled, not knowing what to say to her.
"Cap wants us down in the barn for a lineup, she said to hurry and that she needed to tell us something important," Vic told them and rushed to go down. Travis and Maya looked at each other.
"How badly do you think this is going to go?" Travis asked Maya.
Maya didn't know what to say. Her best friend. The person she had been with for every milestone in her career was about to tell the station that, once again, she would not be captain. She turned to Travis after sliding down the poll. "Bad. Like really bad."
I'm breaking my own heart writing this :(
