In the pavilion of the government yamen, the yamen runners were gathered around, playing with fighting crickets and having a great time. When they noticed the arrival of Judge Lin Xuanshu, they quickly hid the crickets in their pockets and greeted him with bowed heads.
Judge Lin Xuanshu had a stern and imposing demeanor in front of his subordinates, and he scolded the group of men angrily for their actions.
Xu Xuacao followed behind Judge Lin Xuanshu, worried about the safety of the people of Lin’an in the hands of these yamen runners.
The yamen runners dared not speak in front of Judge Lin Xuanshu, but after he left with Xu Xuacao, the fat yamen runner pulled on the ear of the thin one and said with a lecherous grin, “Judge Lin brought a beautiful woman with him. This is big news!”
“Isn’t she a disciple of the Wugui Sect?” The thin yamen runner slapped away the fat one’s hand. “She’s a tough little lady. It’s good enough that Judge Lin hasn’t fallen for her.”
Judge Lin Xuanshu brought Xu Xuacao to the file room and showed her the information on the six victims of the family massacre.
Xu Xuacao calculated the birthdates of the victims’ children and discovered that they were all born on a Yin year, Yin month, and Yin day. This was a very strange coincidence, and it was likely that the evil spirits had chosen these six families for a reason.
After listening to Xu Xuacao’s analysis, Judge Lin Xuanshu pondered for a moment and said, “We can find the people born on Yin year, Yin month, and Yin day by checking the household registration, but there are too many people in Lin’an Prefecture. It would take too much time to check them one by one. Tomorrow will be the tenth day.”
Xu Xuacao also felt helpless. She blamed herself for her blindness, which had delayed them for some time.
At that moment, a gray-clothed youth knocked on the door and poked his head in. “Judge, I have a letter here.”
Judge Lin Xuanshu nodded and said, “Bring it in.”
A boy in gray clothes held a sealed letter and entered respectfully. Lin Xuanzhu was about to take the letter when the boy suddenly turned and walked towards Xu Xuancao: “Sir, this letter is not for you.”
Xu Xuancao looked at the envelope handed to him by the boy and became suspicious: “Is it for me?”
The boy scratched the back of his neck and replied: “The owner of this letter asked me to deliver it to the young lady beside Mr. Lin.”
Xu Xuancao and Lin Xuanzhu looked at each other in confusion.
Who knew she was with Lin Xuanzhu and had specially sent someone to deliver the letter to her. Could there be some conspiracy inside?
Xu Xuancao hesitated for a moment, then took the envelope and opened it. Inside was a line of beautiful calligraphy on snow-white paper:
“Lin’an Prefecture Main City, Yuewan Lane, Xue Family. Perhaps it is the person you are looking for.”
Xu Xuancao read the letter carefully, feeling the warmth of the sender still lingering on the paper, which made her palm feel hot.
Suddenly, she let go of the paper, and it fluttered to the ground like a snowflake.
Seeing Xu Xuancao’s distressed expression, Lin Xuanzhu picked up the paper and wondered, “Who provided the clue?”
Just as he was about to ask who sent the letter, he noticed that the boy in gray had disappeared. He suddenly realized, “I’ve never seen that boy before. Is he a relative of a yamen officer or a secret infiltrator? It seems that this letter cannot be trusted.”
