"I can't believe this. Another human," Rosalie sneered the word, shooting me daggers. "Really?! Do you have no shame?!"

She was hurling mental insults my way, calling me every name in the book and then some. Her frustration was understandable but... Everyone else was perfectly accepting of the news. Jasper was relieved that he no longer had to share the burden of my misery. Emmett and Alice were waiting with open arms, ready to welcome her into the 'family'. Esme was giddy with excitement; her joy was contagious at the prospect of getting to know my 'soulmate'.

"Rosalie." Carlisle spoke up, locking eyes with my livid sister. "He can hardly help who he is fated to. It isn't within his control."

She rolled her eyes. "What in the hell does that even mean?!" She glared at me once more, thinking, I bet you just made it up.

Now, it was my turn to roll my eyes. "Why would I make that up?"

Emmett snickered quietly to himself, amused by the fact that I was (per usual) the one having to face Rosalie's wrath.

"I can assure you he has done no such thing," Carlisle shook his head. "You should be happy for your brother, Rose. The universe has chosen to allow him to meet his perfect match. His soulmate."

Rosalie continued to mentally shout obscenities that I struggled to block out.

Esme clasped her hands together, beaming from ear to ear. "And that's just wonderful, Edward! Oh, I'm so happy for you, dear! And she is so lovely."

Yes, she is. Our conversation from last night played on repeat in my head. She had opened up to me. She may not have let me in completely, but it was a start. My Elliana has suffered a terrible loss— The death of her best friend. The fact that he died saving her was bound to add to her anguish.

Whoever Cedric was, I was eternally grateful to him for saving the precious girl. If there is ever a life for me on the other side (a heaven of some sorts), I would be sure to seek out the brave young man and express my gratitude for providing me a chance with her.

"Yes, she is," I was quick to agree, smiling fondly at the thought of her.

Rosalie shook her head furiously. "This is ridiculous. Didn't you learn your lesson the first time?"

Images of Bella flickered through her mind, followed by glimpses of myself during 'the dark days' through my family's eyes. 'The dark days' being the first few years after Bella. I wasn't equipped to deal with the heartache that losing her entailed. Though I tried to keep to myself to spare my family the pain of seeing me in such a depressed state, they were all affected by my mental absence. Esme, especially.

There were times when my adoptive mother would sob tearlessly, praying for a miracle to snap me out of my heartbroken trance. Guilt engulfed me as Rosalie displayed several memories of Esme down on her knees, praying to a God that (once upon a time) I wasn't sure was even there.
