The Meeting of New and Old

A retelling of New Moon's meeting with the Old Moon, because the episode felt like a thinly-veiled excuse to validate a lot of New Moon's Old Moon slander, and it felt like a slap in the face. This chapter isn't perfect but it captures more of what I had hoped for. (Reusing art.)

"I was nervous about meeting you, actually." I pause at that, brows furrowing as I listen to him give a weak chuckle. "When I first regained "consciousness," coming out of my comatose state, I started getting fed your memories, gradually. But in reverse. So the first thing I became aware of was that you wanted to talk to me, and I just felt this sheer panic. Like, "Oh, God, the better Moon is coming to talk to me? Why, what is he even going to say?" I was already becoming aware of what you thought of me. "Flaming piece of shit," "sack of shit," just... Shit."

He glances back at me for a moment, wearing a tired smile as he shakes his head a bit. "I mean... You're not wrong. I'm not about to sit here and defend anything I did- except for adopting Lunar, sending him to meet Solar, sacrificing my life to save Killcode, and loving Sun. Those are some of the few things I will never regret or apologize for."

"Okay..." I mumble, stepping closer to the tree he's sitting on. "That I can understand." So at least he has some self-awareness.

"Yes, I do."

"What?"

"We're in your head. I'm still receiving input from your memories, and I can hear your thoughts," He explains, looking back towards the sunset. "I do have self-awareness. I never acted like I was ever better than I was, because I knew I had no right to be proud of myself... I still got a swelled head when it came to my "intelligence," though. "Look at me, I'm sooo smart..." But not smart enough to solve my problems. Not smart enough to make up for all the pain I inflicted on everyone I love." He sighs heavily, pressing a hand to his eyes as he murmurs, "Sun deserves so much better. I already messed up my chance to be that, so you gotta do it, okay?"

"Be better, you mean? You're not one to talk about me needing to be better, you know," I mutter, hearing him scoff as he moves his hand, looking back at me sternly.
