You looked everywhere in the office. Nowhere to be found. Maybe Henry took it with him on accident? Or maybe Francis took it up to his room to prank you?
Even still, the file was missing. Meaning you couldn't look at any dopplegängers of Francis and know that they were a dopplegänger. Not without the file.
You search everywhere in the office for what seemed like a lifetime. Still, you found no evidence of it's dissapearance. Where could the file have gone? Surely this was just a prank.
Surely you didn't let in a dopplegänger. Right?
The first resident walks in and it happened to be someone you didn't recognize. You search through the files and you find nothing about them. Meaning, they didn't live here.
"Uhmm... You don't live here, sir...." you say calmly, trying to hide your unease knowing that there was a file missing from the stack.
"Are you sure? Check my file again."
You grab their ID, which had nothing about them on it. All it had was their face, experation date, and the official D.D.D. stamp. Their name was nowhere to be found. The place where it was meant to be was scribbled out.
"Um... Yeah, no. I'm sure you don't live here." you reassure, lifting the cover to the emergency button before he speaks again.
"Please kleine maus."
You immediately go silent. A chill runs up and down your spine. There was only one person you knew who called you that. But this was not him.
His face was too distorted and his clothes were ruined. This was not the Francis you knew. The Francis you knew was still upstairs in his room. Right? This can't be him.
"Uhmm... Sir, please back up from the glass." you say somehow in a calm voice. He notices the tremor in the way you speak and an unsettling smile crosses his features.
"But Y/n... I love you too much. I need to touch you. Feel you in my grasp." he says in an unhinged tone, making you freeze in place.
This wasn't him. It can't be him. You just saw the real one, didn't you? The one upstairs.
"Please, back up from the glass." you ask again, your tone a bit more frantic, your hand hovering over the emergency call button.
"Don't press that button. Nothing good will come if you press that button, dear." the man says, his voice getting louder. "Please just let me in." now he sounded desperate.
"I'm.. Afraid I can't do that." you stammer, stepping back a few paces when he begins to bang his fist against the glass.
"LET ME IN. LET ME IN. LET ME IN." he begins to demand, pounding his fist against the glass.
You lunge forward and slam your hand against the emergency button and the thick metal sheet slides over the window. Your hand flies across the dial of the phone, calling the D.D.D. faster than you ever have before.
"Hello, you've dialed the D.D.D. We have sent a few men to clean up the job for you. Please wait while the cleaning service arrives." the voice on the other end says calmly before the line goes dead.
Your heart was racing. You could hardly breathe. "Oh my god..." you gasp, a hand on your chest to feel your heartbeat.
The sheet flies upwards and a man in a hazmat suit speaks to you. "This concludes the cleaning protocal. You may continue your job."
He said this everytime like it was normal to get a lovesick dopplegänger pounding against the glass, begging to get inside.
But, it was over now. Now, all you had to do was find that file.
You begin searching around once more and suddenly freeze when you feel a hot breath against your neck, a soft whisper calling from behind you.
"I've finally got you, Y/n. All. To. Myself."
