Forgiveness involves willfully putting aside feelings of resentment toward someone who harmed you (American Psychological Association). This is easier said than done, and typically is a process that takes time. But it is very important. In fact, Matthew 6:14-15 states that it is necessary for us to forgive others in order for God to forgive us.
Let us consider first what forgiveness does not mean.
*Forgiveness does not mean that what the other person did was okay.
*Forgiveness does not mean that your feelings aren't valid.
*Forgiveness does not require that you forget what happened.
*Forgiveness may or may not result in reconciliation. What does forgiveness mean?
*Forgiveness is acknowledging and accepting what happened.
*Forgiveness is refusing to let anger or bitterness control you.
*Forgiveness is letting God be the Judge rather than seeking revenge yourself.
*Forgiveness is giving yourself the freedom to heal regardless of whether the other person changes or not.Who are you having a hard time forgiving?
Is it harder for you to forgive others or to forgive yourself?
Write a letter of forgiveness to yourself or someone else.
