Resilience has traditionally been defined as "bouncing back" or returning to one's original state of being following difficult situations. But difficult situations change people. We can define ourselves as survivors and learn from them, becoming stronger, wiser, and more compassionate. Or we can define ourselves as victims and become weak and resentful. Perhaps a better definition for resilience would be having the ability to cope with stressful situations in a constructive manner. People who are resilient are able to regulate their emotions and use problem-solving skills. They also tend to have a strong sense of self, support from other people, and a spiritual base.
