one year prior. springtime. Long Beach, California.

Walk Thru by Rich Homie Quan played lowly from the speaker systems as Amir entered the dispensary, dressed in all black casual attire he greeted a few guests and made his way over to the bar for a glass of champagne, hoping to calm his nerves as the room began to fill with supporters.

Bringing the plastic wine glass of Moët & Chandon Nectar Impérial Rosé to his lips, his eyes immediately land on bis best friend approach him causing a smile to spread across his lips.

"Yo, this turnout is crazy Mir!" His best-friend Hendrix said slapping hands with him before bringing his own plastic cup of strawberry lemonade to his lips. He wasn't a big drinker so one glass of wine would do him in; he was very much a lightweight.

The two of them had been inseparable since the fourth grade when Hendrix moved to California from Jacksonville Florida.

"Honestly, the shit really feels like a dream, wish my pops was here to see it." Amir trailed off drinking down the half-filled glass before grabbing another one from the table.

"He's here in spirit, you know that man. And don't drink too many of those, you still have a speech to give." Hendrix said as they shared a short chortle.

"Oh shit, I forgot my speech at the house!," Amir scoffs as he downed his second glass before tossing the plastic cup into the trash beside them. "I'll have to just wing it this time."

"You got this but listen, I'm gonna go look at those rolling trays and maybe smoke a lil' sum' while I'm here." Hendrix joked as they slapped hands again, Amir watched as he sauntered the short distance to the counter of many strands of marijuana on display for the guests to choose from.

His smile soon faded as he began to toy with the chain around his neck out of nervousness for one, and two it sometimes relaxed his anxiety in crowded spaces. It was a gift and he never took it off.

"Pops, I really hope I don't fuck this up." He mumbled before going to make his rounds to speak with more guests.

After having a few conversations, he approached the front of the crowd of his biggest supporters, he taps his glass of champagne as the room becomes silent and all eyes were on him, he then swallowed down his nerves as his chocolate brown eyes scanned the many faces of the people in attendance.

He was a little disappointed that he and his mothers relationship was so estranged, he invited her and his sister twenty-two year old Onyx on multiple occasions to the opening and even behind the scenes to check out the process of choosing the best strands to sell. But after his mother Hanna told him that she didn't support his career choice he left it alone, deciding to fully remove himself from her life due to lack of support.

In the back of his mind he at least wished that Onyx would show her face. He missed his sister.

"Yo, you good Mir?" Hendrix questioned concerned as Amit snapped out of the memories that were threatening to consume him; he couldn't let that happen; at least not now.

"Oh yeah, sorry I spaced out for a second. I'm good." He said as Hendrix nodded making bis way back to where he originally stood. Amir cleared his throat before beginning to speak.

"I'd like to thank everyone for attending the grand opening of my dispensary Cloud 9. The journey has been a long one, and at some points I felt like givin' up. But like my pops used to always say "Don't give up on the dreams you have, others wish they could accomplish all you've done." He said reaching for the chain his father gifted him only days before his passing.
