The meeting definitely didn't go the way Reigen hoped it would. Even the tiniest positive expectations were crushed when he saw his mother's cold expression. As soon as their eyes met, he knew there won't be an apology or anything of the sorts.

They met in a quiet cafe where neither of them had been before (at least Reigen assumed so) and they sat in a rather isolated corner.

When they were close, neither of them greeted the other. They just gave and returned a nod and there was that. They couldn't even mouth out a proper greeting. Reigen followed his mother to their table. The moment they sat down, her phone rang and she got up fast, walking outside.

Reigen sighed and leaned back in his chair. If only this could pass as fast as possible. He knew his mother liked to make things seem bigger than they were, he was curious what part of whatever she had to say will she exaggerate now?

The call took her a while, maybe ten minutes. She returned and they sat in silence, until a waiter came up to take their order. Upon its arrival, Reigen finally spoke up.

"What's going on? It's not like you to want to see me."

"Speak for yourself. I didn't think you'd even show up."

"Well. I prefer this over you showing up unannounced."

"Stop complaining. I'd like to get this over with as soon as possible."

"At least we still have one thing in common," scoffed Reigen and rolled his eyes. While he did appear confident during the time he was speaking, when he was quiet, he was busy biting the inside of his cheek, praying that his mother would get it over with as soon as humanly possible.

"The reason I called you here," she began. "... is because I am supposed to hand this over to you." After shuffling through her bag she pulled out an envelope. Reigen reached for it, confused, but his mom pulled it back. "This is from your father."

Reigen felt his stomach turn. His father. A quiet and serious man. More than not, Reigen was afraid of him. Perhaps it was his lack of words that made something about him unsettling. Even when he came out, his father didn't say much. All Reigen remembered was that they almost never spoke after that.

And he was rarely brought up during the conversations he had with his sister about him. She also agreed that their father was way too serious, sometimes even serious enough to scare others away, including his children.

The only person that didn't seem to be scared of him was their mother.

"What's in it?" Reigen asked. He felt uncomfortable, waiting for an answer.

Nothing came out of his mother's mouth.

"What's in the envelope?" Reigen repeated, louder this time.

His mother was still hesitating with giving him an answer. Her serious stare only made it worse.

Reigen stood up and leaned across the table.

"What's in there?" he repeated, louder.

His mother sighed and offered him to take the envelope, finally.

"Your part of his will," she said. "What he left you."

"Will?" Reigen slowly sat down, reaching for the envelope with his shaking hands. "Did he-"

"Yes."

Reigen wasn't sure what to say or how to act. Somehow, he never thought about the future where this would happen. When he was thinking about his parents it was mostly related to the past, never the future or the present. Despite having a poor relationship with his father he felt his stomach twist, yet he tried to keep a straight face, not knowing what emotion he might show if he lowered his guard.
