"K-Kai!"

"Kai please!"

"Please don't leave me!"

Tears drip down from emerald eyes as young smooth hands grasp older worn ones.

Kai looks up at the face of his younger brother, eyes softening as he sees the fear and anguish in his eyes.

"Hey, Greenbean. Don't cry." He murmurs softly, reaching up with a hand to wipe away the tears that glisten in Lloyd's eyes.

"B-But I don't want to be alone!" Lloyd cries, holding his brother's hand tighter.

"You still have Nya and Zane. And the rest of us will be watching over you. You won't ever be alone." Kai says, taking a deep breath but then wincing at the pain it causes.

Lloyd notices this and fumbles around for the pain medication. But Kai grabs his hands and he stops, more tears falling from his eyes.

"Lloyd, I'm going to die. You can't change that." Kai firmly states.

"But please, stay strong, if not for yourself then for me and Nya, you know she's going to need you now more than ever."

"I'm going to be alone." Lloyd whispers.

"Nya's getting weaker by the day, and Zane's already thinking about stopping repairs and just letting time have its way with him."

Kai frowns and says, "Lloyd, look at me."

Lloyd shakes his head but Kai reaches up and grabs his chin, using some of the precious strength he still has to force his brother to look at him.

"You are not going to be alone." He says, staring Lloyd dead in the eyes.

"The five of us will always be with you. And you have all of your students too."

"But they're all going to die." Lloyd mumbles, "And I'll still be here for hundreds of years."

Kai sighs, his body is starting to feel heavier. And it's getting harder to keep his eyes open.

"Lloyd, I don't have much time left. And the others are too far away to get here in time. So I need you to do something for me."

Lloyd looks over at Kai. He's willing to do anything for his older brother.

"Please tell Nya that I love her and will always be there by her side, waiting until she joins us." Kai says, a ping of grief flashing through his chest as he imagines his sister crying, something he never wants to see.

"And tell Zane that he's been one of the best friends I've ever had. And thank him for all the wonderful meals over the years." A smile flits across his face as he remembers Zane making everyone the best cakes on their birthday, and how the Nindroid always insisted that it was nothing.

Kai's vision dims for a moment, and panic flashes through his brain. He hasn't said his final words to Lloyd yet!

Focusing very hard, Kai manages to make the black retreat to the very edges of his vision. But he knows he doesn't have long.

"Lloyd," he gasps, and a flash of fear goes across the blond's face, "you're my little brother, my best friend, my leader. Thank you for always being there for me. I love you, and don't you ever forget it."

He gasps again, struggling to bring air into his lungs.

"Kai!" Lloyd chokes out, noticing his brother's struggle.

But to Kai, Lloyd's voice sounds strangely far away. And the black that he had been holding back starts to creep further into his vision.

A heavy sensation settles over him, but instead of feeling scared, Kai feels calm, at peace. More relaxed than he's felt in years. And he knows, right then and there he knows, he's about to die.

With the last of his strength, Kai looks over at his little brother one last time, and a small smile spreads across his face.

"Goodbye Lloyd." He whispers. Then the black finally spreads over his entire vision, and the sound of Lloyd's sobs fade away. Kai's final breath slips out of his lips. Warming the air one last time.

Five months later

The sound of waves gently lapping against the wooden supports under the docks fill the evening air. Two figures stand at the edge of the platform, with another sitting in between them.

Lloyd looks out across the endless sea, breathing in the familiar salty air as he watches the sunset. To the left of him is Nya, sitting in a wheelchair with a sky blue blanket over her lap. Zane stands on her left, keeping a careful eye on her vitals while enjoying being with his family.

Nya is quiet as she looks down into the water. She had been diagnosed with stage three pancreatic cancer almost two and a half years ago, and it wasn't looking good for her. At first she had responded well to treatment. But after Jay's death it started being less and less effective. And once Kai passed on, it stopped working all together.

Nya knows she's going to die soon. But she's ok with it. She's lived a long and happy life, had some of the best friends and family she could ever have asked for. Her only regret is that she'll be leaving her little brother with just Zane left. But Lloyd is strong, Nya knows that he'll be able to push through and keep going.

A soft wind blows from the coast, ruffling her hair. As it passes, Nya swears she could hear the sound of her brothers and husband's voices calling out to her. Telling her it's almost time to go.

Slowly Nya raises her head to look up at her younger brother. Lloyd is still looking out at the sea, but as she watches him, he seems to feel her gaze and turns to look down at her. Nya gives him a small smile and reaches up with her right hand for him to hold. Gently Lloyd takes her hand in his own, treating it as if it were glass. Turning to face Zane, Nya reaches out with her left hand, and as the nindroid takes a hold of it, she lets out a soft sigh and looks back at the water.

They stay like this for the better part of an hour, until Zane begins to pick up a slight slowing in Nya's heart rate on her vitals. A heavy feeling settles over him, understanding what will soon happen. He debates between telling Lloyd or not, and eventually decides to let him enjoy the time he has left with his sister, without it being tainted by the knowledge of her fast approaching death.

The sun is more than halfway below the waves when Lloyd feels Nya's hand start to grow colder. Tears prick at his eyes as he realizes what is happening. But he had promised Kai that he would stay strong for Nya, so instead of falling into tears like he wants to, he looks over and catches Zane's eye. He can tell that the Nindroid knows as well, as there is a deep sadness in his eyes.

A soft squeeze on his left hand causes Lloyd to look down, meeting the gray-blue eyes of his sister. Nya beckons to him to come closer, so he kneels down by her side, waiting for what she has to say.

"I just want you to know that you'll never be alone. I know that's your greatest fear, but we'll always be with you. And thank you for being the best little brother I could ever have."

She gives his hand another squeeze before turning to face Zane and doing the same. Whispering into his ear as the Nindroid quietly listens, a small smile appearing on his face as he does so.

Once she's done they all look out at the sea again. The sun rests only a few inches above the water, its last rays giving off a red-orange glow and painting the sky beautiful shades of red, orange, pink, and yellow.

And as the sun disappears below the waves, Nya's eyes gently close, and her heart finally rests.
