Chapter Three: Perturbation

...

Harry's P.O.V

The dry leaves swirled around the two of us, lifting and drifting about with the wind as its carrier. That very same gentle breeze ran through my light curls, and blew my hair across my eyes so that I constantly had to push it back. The crisp air was cool and inviting on my exposed arms and pink cheeks.

The sun was setting slowly somewhere in the distance, and the low point it resided at cast a yellow outline onto everything surrounding. The Big Tree, the pretty leaves and the only two people in this heaven like place. All of it sketched around by a warm glow that promised only good by its simple nature.

I grinned broadly at Tammy, eyes bright and heart racing with excitement. Tammy smiled just as hugely back, and soon I could hardly contain myself. Actions alike as I ran forward, stumbling in my haste and wrapping my arms tightly around my friend.

"Tammy!" I cried out, burying my face into her warm shoulder. "I've missed you so much!" I blinked harshly as tears formed in my eyes, my joy to overpowering to stay within. I couldn't believe it, she was back. After everything, all this time! I was so happy. I'd never been this happy ever. Ever!

I squeezed her tightly and laughed giddily. It could all be perfect now, all of it. Everything.

But something wasn’t right.

It only took a heartbeat for me to realise that Tammy was unresponsive. My brows furrowed with confusion and I hugged my child hood friend tighter, as if reminding her to do the same back. But still, there came no reaction or response of any kind.

Reluctantly I loosened my grip, pulling back slowly to ask her what was the matter. Wasn't she glad to see me, like I was her? But now with a full view of Tammy's face, all of my questions were answered.

Her expression was smooth, practiced. Blank. Her eyes were cold and lifeless in comparison. They held no joy, sadness, anger or any kind of emotion at all. My heart must have surely stopped at the unwelcome sight.

"Tammy?"

My voice echoed lonely in the so suddenly tense air. Cold hands moved from where they were wrapped around her waist to be placed on either of her shoulders. Tammy didn’t even seem to have heard me.

"Tam, are you alright?"

And just as true fear began to boil to the surface of my blood, Tammy parted her lips to speak. My immense relief was short lived, when I listened to the words she spoke next.

"You forgot me…"

She whispered out the four syllables, pain filling every sound she made to the brim.

"N-no." I stuttered, unable to comprehend the damaged note to her words. "You, you left! You said you would come back, you didn't!" I shouted at her, even though my voice held no menace. I was scared by the broken look on her elegant features and the panic was toppling over inside me with it.

"But you forgot." Tammy said with so much simplicity and truth that I was instantly floored. I stared at her, wounded. Her gaze was blank.

She was right. Of-course she was. Tammy was always so much smarter than I was…

"I'm sorry." I choked out. The wind had grown stronger, the intensity growing with each passing second. The brittle edged leaves that had previously been floating with the breeze so softly were now crashing into one another and plummeting to the ground with the harshness. My tears stung and I felt no need to wipe them away, there was no point. They were endless.
