Marlowe avoided her family that next morning, feeling too embarrassed to face them after spending all night crying in her room. She rode to school with EJ, which hurt Luca, but he knew how upset she was over the whole North High thing. So he didn't bother her. But that didn't stop him from glancing at her during rehearsal, only to see her with the still dull look on her face.

"Five questions to really know someone's character." Miss Jenn started and held up a clip board. "Today, I want you all to go fully method. Stay in character for this entire exercise. I want each of you to come to the front of the room, I'll prompt you with a question, and you'll answer in character."

"So should I speak in a French accent?" Luca asked, imitating a really bad French accent. Everyone around him laughed.

Miss Jenn smiled. "You don't necessarily have to, but, if it helps her into character, then go for it!" She encouraged. She looked for a volunteer and her eyes landed on EJ. "Gaston! Let's start with you."

Marlowe lifted her head from his shoulder and smiled at him. Ashlyn clapped and EJ stood from the bleachers.

"Question 1: 'If you had to pick one book to live inside, what would it be and why?'" Miss Jenn asked him.

"Ooh, uhh. . ." EJ thought to himself. "Like a book of etiquette? Y'know, cause Gaston could really use some manners, always spitting and shooting stuff. It's like chill, Gaston."

Everyone laughed. "You're not too far off, buddy." Said Knox, clearly joking.

They laughed again. "Thanks, bro." he said back, also joking.

"Love that," Miss Jenn chuckled. She looked at the questions again. "'What would you ask your future self?'"

Marlowe hummed and titled her head, looking at EJ for his answer.

Instantly, EJ's mind wondered away from Gaston and he thought about his own future. He'd been planning it out for so long, with help from his dad who sometimes made the choices for him. When he lost Duke, EJ was sure that his future was over. What else could he have besides the one thing he'd been working towards forever?

"Oh, trick question. Gaston's dead." Ricky spoke with a small laugh.

Everyone looked at him, not laughing back. "Jesus, Ricky." Luca said and his brows raised.

"What? It was funny."

"Not really." Marlowe said to herself, only loud enough for her to hear.

"I'd ask if he could ever learn to love anyone after Belle," EJ answered.

Their ears perked up. Marlowe intertwined her hands and rested her cheek against them.

"I mean, she's the most beautiful girl in the land. She's smart, she's insightful. She's everything a man, even Gaston, could want." His eyes fell on his girlfriend, her face visibly going soft. "How does it get much better than that?" His voice faded slightly.
