"Mariyah, what's on your mind?" Ammi asked, noticing my nervousness.

"Nothing, Ammi," I replied, hesitant.

But Ammi's gaze saw right through me.

"Mariyah, we know all about your friends' achievements," Ammi began. "You've all worked hard, and Allah will reward your efforts."

"Ammi you know all of my friends got good marks" I said to ammi who smiled at me.

"Ofcourse they all will. You guys studied this much hard. Allah never dissatisfy anything" she said
I took a deep breath.

"Ammi, one of my friends is going to the UK for medical studies," I shared. I gulped down

Ammi's expression turned thoughtful.

"That's wonderful! May Allah guide her." She said folding the clothes.

I mustered courage.

"Ammi, what about me?" I asked.

Ammi's hands paused, folding clothes.

"Mariyah, we've discussed this. Your father and I want you to study under our supervision. We worry about your safety."

My heart sank.

"Okay," I whispered

I went to kitchen to make something as I was hungry then amaan came.

"Salam" my brother said while entering into kitchen holding a bag of groceries

"Salam" I said and took that from his hand

"Diiiii, I have great news!" Amaan exclaimed.

"What is it?" I asked.

"You can get into your dream college!" he announced, happily.

My smile faltered.

"Thanks, Amaan."

"Indonesia, right?" he asked.

I nodded. I smiled tightly.

"Don't worry, dii. I'm with you. Let's discuss this at dinner.

"yessss" I said and looked at him

"Amaan, what are you doing at home?!" I asked, eyes narrowing.

"Hey, dii! I took a holiday," he said, grinning mischievously.
My jaw dropped.

"There were no classes, so I thought, why not?" he added.

I couldn't believe it.

"Ammi allowed this?" I asked and he nodded.

"Yes, she said it's okay."

My mind flashed back to when I was his age.

If I had dared to take a holiday without permission, Ammi would have scolded me.

Double standards stung.

"Amaan, you know Ammi wouldn't have let me do this," I said.

Amaan shrugged.

"Maybe she trusts me more," he teased.

I rolled my eyes.

"Go now, I have work to do," I said.

Amaan chuckled.

"Calm down, lady!"
With a wink, he left.

I sighed.

Why did Ammi always favor him?
Was it because he was the son?

I pushed aside the resentment.

Now wasn't the time.

I had my own battles to fight.

After eating I completed my chores and washed my hands and was going to my room  Then I heard from my parents room

"She will get a good life please try" ammi said.
Sometimes ammi takes my side too and sometimes abbu.

My face falls, because of me they are discussing these.

I went to my room and jumped at my bed and took my phone and started searching about best medical collages in Indonesia
There was more than I expected hmm feels good

Soon I looked at wall clock shows time 6:40 pm I have to pray magrib I ran to do ablution

"Allahuakbar" I started praying
Soon I completed my salah and started praying and lifted my hands and tears unknowingly started to flow

"Ya Allah, Ya Rehman, please ease my path. Grant my parents understanding."

After Salah, I arranged dinner, bracing for another conversation
As started to eat then my brother looked me as "tell them" I eyed him

"Abbu!" I called.

"Yes, Mariyah?"abbu replied.

"Ammi, abbu, I need to discuss something," I began.

"Say it, beta," abbu encouraged.

I took a deep breath."I want to study abroad."

The room fell silent with an awkward, cold silence until di says

"Great idea!"  She said smiling widely.
Ammi's face fell, and abbu's expression turned stoic.

"We will think about it," Abbu  said finally and left followed by ammi.

My brother's reassuring words didn't calm my racing heart.

"They'll understand, Mariyah. You deserve this chance."

"Dii its ok, I knew abbu will be fine with that" he tried to smooth me

"but-!!?" my voice cracked as I said

"They will" dii came and consoled me

"I want to pursue my dreams, dii," I confessed.

Dii's warm hug comforted me.

"They will understand, Mariyah. Have faith."

I hope.

"Pakka na?" I asked, di looked at me with glassy eyes and hugged me once again.

"Pakka!" She said,patting my back.
